Prostitution in Korea While there are no street hookers and the milieu is drug-free, prostitution is nonetheless widespread and a serious problem in Korea. As of 2003, a study performed by the Korean Institute of Criminology showed that 4.1% of the women in their 20s were working in the trade industry. However, things might be improving rapidly in this regard with the strict enforcement of a law against this type of activity passed in September 2004. For instance: In 2002, South Korean police arrested 3,500 people in the sex trade. But since the crackdown was launched, some 16,951 prostitutes were arrested in 2004 and 18,508 in 2005, the Ministry on Gender Equality said. As well, Seoul's largest red-light district now only has 60 brothels compared to more than 150 just a few years ago. The campaign has encouraged more than 1,200 people a year to enter a government program that offers a 7.6 million won ($8,000) grant for job training and other expenses as well as a place at a halfway house to help them leave the profession. The program also provides interest-free loans of up to 30 million won to help former prostitutes start their own businesses. Prostitution in Korea takes on several faces including the massage parlours, barber shops, bars, brothels, room salons, juicy bars, turkish baths, strip clubs, etc, spread throughout the country. The job is moderately lucrative. According to a recent poll, 80% of women working in the entertainment industry in korea make between 3 and 5 million wons per month net income (3180$US - 5300$US per month), 7% make in excess of 5 million wons, and 13% make less than 3 million wons. The average salary of prostitutes is comparable to the one of korean engineers with 10+ year seniority or professors at public universities. According to the Korean Institute of Criminology, 20 percent of adult males aged between 20-64 purchase sex 4.5 times per month, spending a sum that breaks down to 154,000 wons (165$US) for each visit.
For tourists and aliens alike, only the least desirable options are available. Indeed, in the "decent" red-light districts, foreigners are generally not welcomed especially if they are not accompanied by a korean friend. This is due to several reasons, one being that foreigners are believed to be more susceptible to carry sexually transmitted diseases.
In the case of the room salons, the hostesses are generally not fluent in english and the presence of foreigners does create some incomfort in a situation where chatting, singing, and drinking takes place for several hours. The first class room salons have a cost per person per evening of 1,000,000 wons and include a night in a motel room generally located one floor above or below the salon. It should be noted that for both the second-class and the first-class room salons, physical intimacy with the hostesses will only be possible on the second and subsequent visits.
I never said there wasn't prostitution in Korea, so why throw that in my face. Really what are you trying to prove to me? Also, why am I locked out of subzero?

Phucketbound, you might have received a better reply to your question, had you not included that garbage you copy and pasted from some blogsite. Where do those figures come from?
It seems that way..I also think it is a sensitive issue for a lot of people by the replies. The article was written by a Thai person. I wasn't trying to come across as a know it all, but I surely do know a few things about it. I think the article tells one side of the story, and I surely do think that there is a problem with foreign men going there, even if you don't want to believe it. Whether it is good for the Thai economy or not.

Does everyone think it is a good thing, I mean with all the aids, and trafficking that go on - not to mention about the underage prostitution promoted or run by the government. Oh that's right, It has been going on for centuries, and it happens in all of Asia. My bad.

^Why can't you disprove it then? Why is is bullshit if it is coming from a Thai? Are you saying tha there are no falangs that go to Thailand, and pay for prostitutes, to show off, and give money too?

I realize that it isn't the whole picture by a long shot. But, what exactly about the article don't you agree with?

Probably part of Kevin's recession-busting 'Buy Australian' campaign.

Kev should run ad's specifically contrasting the shapely Australian figure with the bony-ass, flat chested Thai girls. Highlight the outrageous exchange rate with the Baht and how avoiding the 7,000 mile flight reduces your carbon footprint and before long there will be a shortage of shorts and singlet clad beer-monsters shuffling along Beach Road as they vote with their flip-flops and stay at home.

Seriously though the exchange rate has made even going out for a few beers or a meal in a decent restaurant in Bangkok expensive compared to doing the same thing in Sydney or Melbourne.

    Amazing (ly expensive) Thailand

wrong again , but don't let that stop you .

isn't it strange that of the multiple replies you've received to the OP not one has been of support ?

if you'd care to search the board you'll find plenty to disprove your weak OP

if you cared about the subject like you claim you'd know that the style of OP you presented does a disservice to those who are genuine in their abhorrence of the subject .

but hey that wouldn't serve your self rightnesses would it ?

^That doesn't really address the original OP or question now, does it?

Also Mid..if you don't agree with the article, then disprove it. Instead of throwing insults at me.

I did start a huge debate about whether prostitution should be legalized over a Ajarn forum.

Clean up your own backyard PB. Canada is rife with under aged prostitutes. As far as the sex trade here involving women of legal age, perhaps the next time you see an old man with a lady you should go try and "save" her by telling him what a bad man he is. I could predict the ladies response for you.

^^I'm sorry, but why are you talking about Canada, when I'm talking about Thailand? Why is this being so deflected? And wtf, does my age have anything to do with anything?

I could dredge up statistics about prostitution in Thailand, and trafficking/aids stats, but then that would get personal to, right?

I'll just drop it for now. My opinion may be very different then yours, but that doesn't mean I don't see the whole picture.

My opinion is that where humans are concerned - anything goes providing there is enough money to be made, whatever the nationality.

    There are no sides, really.

Prostitution has existed for centuries. Voluntary. Consenting.

Yes, there are rare and horrible cases of slavery. Asians enslaving Asians, for Asian customers. They should be punished.

I just can't believe the government allows it, and even promotes it. Many of you may think.. well what is wrong with it. Well if it is between two consenting adults, then it may not be so bad,
Whether it's "legal" or not is irrelevant. It has always existed, and will always exist.

There is no social welfare net. What would happen if all of the money spent in Pattaya that is sent up north dried up? If Western Union payments stopped? Gold jewelry, and other means of support. Allowances to "tee-raks?"

but sex trafficking is a huge problem, and the aids epidemic.
This is an entirely different issue, bad as it is.
You make some really great points, Milkman. I guess tourism, and money flows out of prostitution. I do wander though, do all the girls do it because they don't have many other choices? Possibly. Especially when they are sold into it by even their own parents. Seeing it as an outsider, and even from within Thailand boggles my mind. At least I try and understand it, I suppose.

Thanks for all of your replies. Except for the personal insults.

Not a bit strange, just says quite a lot about the men who are so ooo defensive about it.

Nothing less than I expected and also your, and others insults.

Can men not debate something with a woman without lecturing or being insulting.

So I take it, AO and Mid and all you others, that you think prostitution would be a reasonanble career choice for your daughters?

If not, why not? It seems to be the preferred retirement plan for lots of Thai parents
