    The 2.5 Year Hurdle

As I enter the latter half of my third year in Thailand, I am noticing a new phenomenon, and it is not restricted solely to myself.

It is the desire to lash out and put a fist in the face of some probably totally undeserving Thai.

It is the consequence of increased tension from a number of local sources that in the past you were able to shrug off with a smile, simply ignore, or were not even aware of.

    * The greeting of your question of a Thai with a blank smile is no longer quirky, but clear evidence you are dealing with the brain dead.
    * You tend to notice the short, bandy-legs and splayed feet ahead of the slim waists, gorgeous smiles, and lovely skin and hair of the Thai women.
    * The sound of any syllable in Thai ending in -ao or -ai just grates, especially when screeched in a monosyllabic statement.
    * You just want to grab the next mobile phone you see and throw it in the nearest klong.
    * You feel the hairs on the back of your neck raise every time an elevator or BTS door opens, knowing what inevitably comes next...

    And the list goes on...

You know it is not healthy. You know the problem is as much about your tolerance and stress levels as it is about Thais. But you also know you can't shake it and also know that, sooner or later, you are going to crack...

I have discussed this with several people who are experiencing similar feelings. A couple are actually planning to go elsewhere for two or three months to perhaps clear out the tension before returning to enjoy life in Thailand as it should be, or used to be.

I am beginning to think that is not a bad idea. Maybe every couple of years, I will need a decent break from Thailand...and perhaps Thailand needs it from me!

Have others experienced this? What did you/do you do to work through it?

(And for the Thailophiles "Go home if you don't like it!" is not a valid response. I enjoy living here and wish to continue doing so...but these little things....argh! )

    OK just having a laff,

agreed some things bother you - a holiday is prolly the thing you need, or indeed a trip 'home' and suddenly you realise that there is the same number of things at home that bothered you when you lived there,

the blokes/junkies wanting money at every train station,
teenagers pushing to get onto trams,
    cold weather,
having to walk through a crowded bar just to get drink,
bars that have dirty ashtrays and empty glasses because they dont have enough staff,
being refused entry to a bar - just cos its friday night and your with 2/3 other male friends,

^ Willy just jumped forward into the future, read what I was typing, jumped back into to the present, typed exactly the same thing and pressed "post" a nanosecond before I did. In other words, what Willy meant to say was "I agree with benbaaa".

Now Willy, stop doing that time travel thing, will you?

I hope it's not the one on the left, with his little knob showing.

    Hi Torbek,

Very interesting idea dawg. I've lived in Japan 3 seperate times and always left right at the 3 year mark so you have me wondering if I stayed here longer would I start to have similar feelings about this country and the Japanese. Hard to tell. I often wonder if I'll be ready to leave Thailand after about 3 years for a whole lot of reasons.

Great thread torbek. I have never lived in Thailand long enough to get to the stage you are at.

Sounds like a holiday home is just what you need. Either that or what about an extended holiday in Thailand? 6 weeks on the beach somewhere where your interaction with thais will be minimal.

Either that or go to china or korea for a break - you will be begging to get back home to thailand!
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

    Torbek:

It is a problem I have encountered many times with expats in Thailand. Actually, I think you have done well to last 2.5 years, as I usually see this happening around the second anniversary of living here.

    Ordinary responses to this are:

    (a) work through the difficult patch and see if things get any better; or
    (b) as you said, take a few months out and return (if your job allows you to do this).

In fact, generally I think it is unhealthy to stay in Thailand for too long (without a break outside LoS, even if it is only a few weeks) simply because you do tend to lose touch with what passes for reality.

Then again, I've been here 10 years this year and every year has been my last

In Chiang Mai, it is a lot more slow and we get less hassel than you blokes in BKK.However, I find that if my expectations are low, then I will not be dissapointed. If I have some work to do that should take half a day, I fully expect it to take 2 .

If also helps to have an attitude that when something is really getting on your tits , you go "fuck it" time for a pint.

    very true.

i also find it helps by just using my driver more, to travel to work and back visit at the British club for dinner and drinks and - i can avoid contact with most Thai's anyway - and practically believe that i havent left England at all.

It took you 2 years to get there ? it took me 6 months when I wanted to smash every Thais I came accross. It gets better, that's the good news. The trick is to leave Thailand every 3 months and have a nice trip in civilization. Singapore is a good start. The city is beautiful and the people are ok and the food wonderful. Can get a cheap hotel for less than 3000 baht over the internet

Based on the well known principle that if you deny something, then obviously it's true. Likewise, if you ignore the accusation, then it's true. And obviously if you accept that it's true, then it's also true.
