Yes. Three times from Business Class to First Class from Sweden to Chicago.

    Added:
There were a few other upgrades from coach to business class in later years. With two Gold cards, flying coach was no real problem as I got to use the lounge facilities all over the globe. With the extra frequent-flier miles upgrades to business class were frequent.

Happened once in bangkok, tourist class to business Thai airways to Frankfurt. Why? No idea, maybe the check in girl fancied me though that's unlikely.

    Some tips about upgrades...

upgrades are not possible on a discounted ticket so if you have paid the full fare you are in line...
upgrades are given to those who 'look the part' so if you want an upgrade you have to dress accordingly...
always ask for an upgrade when you check-in... because the airline staff know already if the flight is overbooked...
upgrades come because the economy section is overbooked but there are spare seats in business and first class...
you'll never get upgraded two classes unless you know the check-in girl!... so if you're travelling on an economy class full-fare ticket you might get an upgrade to business class and from business class to first class..
Good luck because an upgrade on a long haul flight is one of life's unexpected pleasures...

I had a discounted ticket and did not look that neat.

    Not at all true.
I had discounted ticket on TG from Shanghai to the UK via Bangkok for me and my wife (it was HEAVILY Discounted - I think something like "O" class.)

We couldn't check seats all the way through due to the flight times, and we were told to check in again at BKK for the London leg.

I went to the check in desk and asked it was possible to get an aisle seat near the toilets ( the wife was pregnant at the time and needed to piss a bit!)

The guy smiled and handed over a pair of business class boarding cards.

I could have kissed him, great the stewardess came around and asked about drinks, I was on JD at the time, and she later dimmed the lights, and left the bottle on the bar.

I demolished that, woke up in paradise, expecting to be arriving in London, and found I was half way acroos the Bay of Bengal...it's a long flight, but it did make it better.

Also, I was wearing jeans, and a T shirt - I reckon they had overbooked and had no where else to put me, 'cause to be honest, I wouldn't have upgraded me to business class!

Just got my 1st upgrade on Wed, LHR -BKK.
I Was on a discounted ticket, I was wearing jeans and a coat from George of ASDA. Though a TG ROP gold member.
Asked for a window seat but she said all were taken and the flight was full, but see what happens when I get to the gate.
I got to the gate and she said 'congrats' sir you've just been upgraded to Business class'

I couldn't get on the plane fast enough, and couldnt keep the smile off my face once I'd sat down shame it was only an 11h flight

I have quite a nice deal that I either get at least one spare seat next to me in economy or get upgraded. But then I do fly a lot. Also, with a Gold Card you get use of all the First Class facilities and limo service anyway.

Not upgraded no, but did have United cancel one on me the day before labor day in 1957 from Frisco to NY and the day I was due to report for duty in Groton Conn.
But made an emergency connection with Continental,, so was my last flight in the Friendly Skys and a long connection with continental.

Emirates would upgrade Skywards gold card holders if there were any empty seats in business class. Happened to me a few times.

^Should think so too - when I used to use them you couldn't get a foking seat in their so-called First Class Lounge in Dubai Airport!

I flew American Airlines LHR Toronto on Jan 1st 2000, the midday concorde to New York was cancelled because everyone was shitting themselves over the millenium bug.

43 people on my flight and did not get an upgrade cos the flight crew 's family had filled up business class.

they were the most fukkin miserable lot I ever flew with and we had the same lousy cvnts on the return.

The advert for Air Canada years ago when they put the cat out and everyone remains on board after landing having a good ole piss up is pretty representative

Because I work for the big red rat ( Qantas) I get an upgrade all the time, we have to pay for it though, only trouble is now the missus is so used to flying in business, she gets the dirts if there are no business class seats left

Spent half my life on Airplanes. But now I suffer from cloistrophobia, for some reason, so flying is something of a trial for me.

Last trip to UK I suddenly started to have a panic attack. So they gave me a pill and put me in a bed in the 1st Class compartment to sleep it off.

Tried it again on the way back to LOS. But all I got was a glass of water!!!!

Have someone die of a heart attack on the seat next to you in economy just before take-off. Chances are they soil the seat and while they remove the body and luggage (unaccompanied luggage can't fly) you will be ushered to the posh seats and fed Bloody Mary's.

Most of my traveling was Business Class ( or the equivalent) for 30 odd years and got many upgrades to first.
Jewel in the crown was there was a price war on transatlantic routes and all was a bit chaotic.
I had been to the states for a meeting and was going back to UK for onward flight to Lagos in two days time.
Was considering stopping on in the states for another day to save all the trouble of finding overnight hotel in London, but as my flight was confirmed and there was all this problem at the airport, I thought bugger it I will get the confirmed flight.
Turned up at the BA checkin and there was pandemonium !
They were overbooked in Business Class and the flight was full !
BA discretely asked for volunteers to take a later flight so I went for it - I was in no rush !
They told me that as I was holding a BA Gold Card they would guarantee me the first available seat on any BA flight to Heathrow the next day after a 5 * hotel overnight .
Next morning a BA limo collected me and delivered me to the CONCORDE checkin!!
There was a spare seat and it was the first BA flight to Heathrow

So - what was it like ?

Like sitting in a luxuriously furnished cigar tube with windows like the bottom of beer bottles - not that you could see anything anyway !

Good thing was the bloody lovely food
    Short flight time
Best of all was when they put those engines into re- heat on take off !! Was like gettin a huge kick up the bum !!

P.S Flights etc were on expenses cos I was just a hairy arsed engineer but the company wanted to impress clients !!!
