TAT's 'Thailand: Fuck The Poor' Campaign

‘Only a devastating drought or swarm of locusts could have made things better,’ says governor

BANGKOK – The Tourism Authority of Thailand announced yesterday that its media and collateral campaign for 20o8 – “Thailand: Fuck the Poor” – had been a huge success and must be continued into 2009.

In a triumphant speech at its annual New Year's party, TAT governor Phornsiri Manoharn said the risky slogan had brilliantly reminded people around the world why Thailand is still such a great holiday destination.

“In one fell swoop the slogan captured the two pillars of Thai culture: our complete denial of equal rights and civil power to anyone without money and the availability of Thai prostitutes created by crushing, chronic economic disparity. In doing this, we have created more brand recognition in more markets and more countries ever enjoyed by ‘softer’ campaigns like ‘Amazing Thailand’ or ‘Thailand Grand Invitation’. Walk on any street in Europe today and you will see someone wearing a ‘Thailand: Fuck the Poor’ T-shirt,” she said.

Continuing, she claimed: “In the past year, the slogan has also been consistently reinforced in the minds of global travellers. They may have heard, for example, about the entire disenfranchisement of the northeast and thought – ‘Fuck the Poor!’ Or they may have heard about the closure of the airport by a Bangkok elite and said, “That's right Thailand. Fuck the Poor!’. Or they may have even heard about hardship among restaurant workers, hotel staff, and small businesspeople, and all these tourists, instead of thinking they should stay away from Thailand, they said - ‘You know what. Fuck the poor! I am going!”

Phornsiri then unveiled several graphs which showed income levels dropping and the number of sex tourists rising.

“Next year, these tourists can expect thousands of recently unemployed factory workers to enter the sex industry and yes, ‘Fuck the Poor!’ they can. Only a drought or swarm of locusts could make things better,” she concluded.

Hasn't this been the case since the start, for the rent-a-slut business?

^ Perhaps the PAD needs to take to the streets again to find it's sense of humour BF?

Obviously the fact that Thailand is currently the laughing stock of the world is because foreigners do not understand the 'Thai way'.

And Thailand wasn't the laughing stock of the world before that ? always been, and I don't think the tourists will remember any of this PAD thing in the years coming,

you and a few others are assuming that tourists are more interested in the inner politics of Thailand than the sun and beaches they come to

Just great. Not far from the truth, either. I especially like the graph:

The world does not know or care about Thailand - here in Asia you do get Singapore taxi drivers and the like smirking about Thailand though

They must be. When I flew to Singapore just before Suvarnabhumi opened both taxi drivers I spoke to showed concern over the new Bangkok airport and were worried it would be challenging Changi for regional hub status.

I told them, to coin a Thai phrase; mai bpen rai.

And the latest SHITE in the rag, sorry, the Bangkok Post, is advising all Thais to take a homeland holiday based on 1000 Baht/day...Don't go abroad, help the poor, spend 1000 baht per day visiting your own country..(and...money from where?).My advice would be to stay at home and buy a few bottles of Lao Kao....and watch this magnificent nation sink to the depths that so rightly suits it! fukc camping on Doi Inthanon -you'll only spoil the National Parks!, swimming in the filth of the Gulf of Thailand (maybe condoms can be washed and re-used?), wandering the filthy potholed streets of Chiang Mai / Bangkok, driving your new Toyota through the pot holes for 700km, oh the pleasure, what a wonderful place to be! Why not visit Pai, and see the sights where the policeman took out a couple of Canadians, or the historic town of Kanbchanaburi, and visit the Thai Burma railroad, (remember that Thailand has never been occupied before...cough.. cough.. the Japanese, they didn't by any chance take Thailand in ....what was it 4 HOURS!, or the Burmese...cough again) or visit the remains of the restaurant where another Thai cop blew the brains out of another holidaymaker or two....welcome to hapiness, paradise Thailand!
Don't forget, even though the wonderful display of Yellow Shirted Fascist Terrorism is now over for this season, the new display of the Red Breasted Nationalist Antagonists is just beginning, Thailand, a place for everyone!

Well, dearest Butterfly, you appear to believe that time stands still. Since I have lived in the LOL (Land Of Lies), I have been sending lots of emails to all of my friends & family, informing them of every sordid detail...the good, the bad, the ugly & the beautiful.
Contrary to what you may think, I have encouraged my family & friends to visit Thailand as I will be their guide should they choose to visit. I will happily expose them to the realities of this country as I believe that it is beneficial to see a country in it's "reality" & not from a bus window.
As time inevitably progresses, so do the number of people who experience the reality of another country. The reflection of this is that awful thing called "The Truth".
You see, the world is tormented & growing smaller. Just because tourists may seem ignorant to the truth now, does not mean that this will be the case in the VERY NEAR future.
Oh, BTW, I like it here. I can cope with all the idiots but this doesn't mean that I have to like them.
Oh for fucks sake! Get a life & stop trying to fuck mine up!

Yet again, more nationalistic trash being delivered to the already brainwashed Thai public.
Has anybody told Thais about North Korea & their "Dear leader"?

I know some Australians that behave like this...they spend all their time wandering from place to place, only to see similar things. The discerning factor is that they never stay there long enough to experience the local life. It's just like a bus trip & you move along taking photos. At the end of the day, you only have the photos...no "real" familiarity or interaction with the locals.

A mate of mine has travelled the world. If you ask him about anything, he can tell you lots...lots of stuff that was on a brochure. He's even been to Thailand. He was shocked when I disputed his "idea" of this country.

...or the brits that will travel to exotic countries... as long as they can get their beer, bangers and mash (or other Brit 'delicacies'), and stay indoors, or in a bar, watching footie on the telly...

Yes, agreed Daffy. A "tourist" is not someone who necessarily learns anything about a foreign country.

Which might also include a lot of the folks who live here and by virtue of planting their ass in some cheap apartment, watching footie on the telly, and drinking beer, believe they are experts on their host country. Lot of that kind around this forum too, I notice (you can tell them easily - they are the ones who claim that someone not living where they fled to, can not possibly know anything (*cough* EmperorTurd *cough*)

You can learn a lot about a foreign culture in a bar.
