Saw this today:
Picasso portrait fetches $95.2m
and thought to myself, "I'll not have paid more than $95.20 for that".
I do, however, like photographic art.
What kind of art do you like?

Painting and architecture and a few others which overlap with 'crafts', such as jewelry and ceramics.
Sorry, not enthused enough to post pics right now.
I have never seen anythn by picasso I thought was remotely appealing. I always liked the work of M.C. Escher. Dali. Photographic art is wonderful when it seems to gather all the elements of a scene and presnet them in a way that seems to convey so much more than you witness in person. The capture of a instant. Thought that pic of the rice fields, posted by stroller, with the sky so beautifully reflected in the water was art.
I like the story of the Japanese guy who bought "sunflowers" by Van Gogh for 60 million about 12 years ago. It has been pointed out that the painting is most likely a forgery.
The gallery has offered to authenticate it. He wont have it done, he is happier believing he has the real deal as opposed to losing face.
Fuckin' Dollars?????60 million
This Van Gogh sold at a discounted $40 million this week
Looks like something AO's kids could have done
I have them copying that baby right now.
Yup Frankie, 60 million USD! Thats a lot of face to lose.
I actually think modern art is a big joke played on the world.
Fuck face! think I'd be knockin' on the dudes door I bought it from. Quite heavily, I might add.
I love many of Salvador Dali's and quite a few of Andy Warhol. Never been keen on Picasso, especially at those prices
Dali does wicked surrealalistic stuff. Warhol I still cant quite figure out. Marilyn was a good one. But Cambell's soup doesnt do much for me.
Personally,I prefer a Goldie.A little cheaper.....
If you own the picture, do you also own the right to royalities on reproductions? If so, I might be more understanding toward the sums being paid. If not, it's just crazy.
LC - that's not have bad.
I think the royalties stay with the families but having said that, I think anything more than one hundred years old is free from copyright.
Prefer a Goldie myself...
double post from a dumb bugger...Oh well, here's another pic then !

Oh, well said little chook.
Lily: Under the Berne Convention, copyright is life + 50 years; unless you use a nome de plume, in which case it is 50 years from creation.
What I wonder is if you only sell the painting, or all reproduction rights. Hmm, something to do this wk/end.
No I dont like art.I would buy that picture to hide a crack on the wall of my room.
Mofos have $95.2 m to buy a stupid painting but never care for the people dieing around the world and all the children who sleep with an empty stomach everynight.I think if the person who bought this painting gave up only a million for a childs education he would have saved a life.
COCK SUCKING MOTHER FUCKERS.
William.
Legal articles for artists say that you cannot copy anyone's painting or photograph unless it is 100 years old.
Do you think they are giving bad advice?
I paint myself and I have read this quite a few times in art publications.
There are many 'Beware of Copyright' articles.
I love watching those paintings, not buying them.
I love art but it is not in my soul like some people if you know what I mean.
hmmm. i'll recheck Berne to see if it has a clause re paintings over the wk/end. Truth be told, I haven't really done IP stuff for over a decade.Originally Posted by Lily
Well the kids have 3 copies already. Wonder if I should book a ticket to Japan. Sucker born every minute.
The raft of the medusa by geicault is my personal fave.
Also serves as the cover for "The Pogues... Rum, sodomy and lash."
I respect art and consider a lot of it to be beautiful and I like the stories behind the paintings.
But I don't know much about art nor artist.
