No. Not war. Disease, famine, and water shortages. War in itself has never made much difference to population levels. Disease has. And with new diseases spreading quickly because of international travel and old diseases becoming resistant to drugs we're already starting to see major population changes.

You are quite correct, I worked in China for a number of years from the late '90's, and when you get to know someone you can trust, and they trust you...well you get to find out some of the things that really went on there, and some of it begs belief!
    Where abouts, out of interest?
There are a few of us old China hands on this forum
In the agricultural regions of WESTERN and South WEST China, they were hit by a particularly bad drought for I think almost ten years, they ate the bark from trees, grass, virtually anything they could get their hands on, later, they gave their children to other families who then ate them, and the other families gave their children to others! There was apparently not one tree that hadn't been stripped of bark and used as food...terrible, and the govt did nothing! It was even possible to buy Human flesh in some of the shops there...

I'll get some details from my mate there, his cousin is "Secret Police" knows a lot of things about the place...give him a telephone number..he can give you every intimate detail of that family going back for generations, he even has a card that if he is "working" and needs to follow someone, can go into any bar/restaurant or hotel, produce his card and the tab is taken care of later by the government...frightening, they were involved in shadowing the "dodgy" people during the APEC meetings in Shanghai back in 2002 if I remember the dates..

They didn't actually eat their own kids but sort of "swapped them"

edited 'cos I mixed up East and West...Western China, not eastern!

I worked in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong/Donguang, Zuhai, Harbin, Suzho, Shenzhen, and a few dodgy Taiwanese casting shops in Jiang Su Province, and some really revolting places about a 3 hours drive from Shenzhen, forget the name of the place, but it was bandit country at night, no one would travel the highways, you would get held up and robbed, the Noble Hotel was the only decent place to stay...I need to look at a map...it was the PITS I think it was called Huizhou" ! (cross it off your "places to see" list") You couldn't walk around at night, you would have been up shit creek! It did however have a remarkable Hooker, who remebered me after 3 years, and gave the most incredible bl....
That was back in the 90's before Pudong became modern...I was even spat on buy women in a department store lift, in Yaohan (ba bai ban) the Japanese department store in downtown Pudong, just for being a Westerner.

I got an update about the "baby eating" (From my friend back in China) it was actually between 1960 and 1963, it was never published or publicized, but is reffered to as "The Three Year Disaster", so for all you "old China Hands"..have a dig at that one, it takes some beating!!! Pretty fucking awful eh!

    Got any recipes?

One-child per couple means a severely declining population. Consider accidents and early deaths and it's a big problem in the opposite direction before long. Even two children per couple results in declines.

As long as several cultures look at children like livestock, the world population will increase.

You imagine (you prefer to think) that I thought it sounded intelligent. To be honest I didn't give it a second thought, not one of my more imaginative titles but to the point.
That was a very patronizing comment, creepily odd for somebody who's supposed to be a mate.

'Why I don't want kids...' would probably have sufficed.
    That's just plain arrogant.

Take away arrogance from an arrogant person and there's not much else.

You can be a nasty piece of work when you want to be, I guess it makes you feel good. Just an observation but you seem to get a kick out of winding people up. You ran Baudhai out of town as if it was a crime to be shy and sensitive. He couldn't take any more, I bet you felt like a right winner that day.

It doesn't say much for somebody's character if they get off on making comments that are made purely to cause discomfort or upset. Nice guy Baudhai was, perfectly harmless.

Anyway, keep it up Mads - I'm sure there's plenty to gain from it.

The one child policy was never strictly enforced in much of China and now has been abandoned to protect against an aging population.

I think Britain could use it but it would be so terribly un PC to deny the council house slappers the right to reproduce.

All this, your supposed to be a mate stuff is a bit much don't you think? It's a comment on the forum pretty much like I have made them to you for 5 years now. Now that I know you person, you expect that I should just follow you round saying positive things all the time?

Am I not better going back to being bkkblandness as I suggested I do before? It's ok for me to do, I really don't mind. Just tell me now, do I have to change my posting style towards you becaue I know you in real life? I thought Scampy was just a character after all?

    That's just plain arrogant.
Well it wasn't really, because you have hardly discussed the one child policy and it's global effects but you have discussed why you don't want kids. Hence I suggested a different title would be just as suitable.

Don't change your posting style for my benefit, carry on.

I found a couple of your comments just sounded rather cunty, and I wasn't the only one who thought so. I'm not staying awake so I can squabble about it, I've told you what I think.

Many people on this forum disagree with me at times, It rarely bothers me so you must be doing something wrong.

Not some attempt at a dig at me I hope.
    Sincerely not.

Anyway, I think a no-child policy should be imposed on some people, including fun-fare workers living in containers and frustrated irate 'merkins stranded in the LOS.

You including momo in that? She just redded and pm-ed me and called me a slew of names in the Red Jet thread, which seems to have vanished. All I said in a repo to her was "Go take care of your kids." Boy, with a corrosive mouth like hers, maybe her kids are better off playing in traffic.

Sounds like Mao and his people on the Long March. I never heard about cannibalism tho; but if people are starving, it's believable. Early 60s was a terribly harsh time for the Mainland.

Actually, I think it was. The government had block spies everywhere. Also, in rural areas especially, folks got financial incentives and other perks to have only one kid.

They don't always, but I think you should re-read the two comments you posted that I took offence at and ask yourself if you'd appreciate a mate taking that tone with you.

I think it's a simple question but I imagine you thought it sounded intelligent.
'Why I don't want kids...' would probably have sufficed.
How would you take that? ...Basically its choosing your own meaning for my sentences in order to belittle me - what an odd, odd, odd thing to do. Very similar to a certain other poster in fact. I've lost count of the people who ask me why the hell I hang with people who seek to belittle me online, and it's something I am beginning to ask myself.

    Well it wasn't really
Well yes it bloody well was it was if that's how I, and a few other observers took it.

I only told him he had Koi.
You wound him up and belittled him also, he couldn't handle it - so it's smileys all around for you and no more forum for him. Sure he was a bit over sensitive - I personally would have seen that as a cue to back off. I'm not saying back off with me, do as you wish but don't expect me to take it lightly if you're out of order.

You asked me a question, this was my answer to it.

'Why I don't want kids...' would probably have sufficed.

I didn't have time to back off, he jumped ship with a nasty post about me beforehand. I didn't belittle him at all. Even though he felt that way. I even sent him an apology for it, even though I didn't really need to. The nasty post came from him after, and no reply to my apology.

You also agreed that he was nuts and far too over sensitive about it when I spoke to you on the phone the same day. I remember we both had a good laugh about it. So why change your tune now?

All the loosers I knew from school had multiple kids at a young age. They don't marry and just fill up houses with thick kids who can't read and are thugs in training.

The problem with the west is that the chav/trailer-trash element of society is the group that reproduces more nowadays. The decent parts of society are too busy building careers.
