Thread: my first attempt at an abstract oil painting.

I was relatively satisfied with my first effort, but not enough to hang it on the wall.
the painting i copied wasn't really my style so I thought I'd buy somne nice shiny acrylics and have another go at finding a style I liked.

I am quite stingy so I painted over an old canvass of a painting I'm bored with rather than spend 0 baht on a new canvass.
I painted over it with a white acrylic wall emulsion, waited for it to dry then painted an abstract woman.

I am really quite happy with it.

can't quite see how many layers are on it, but it's layered quite thick with big brush strokes.



i love the big bright colours.

Only took about 4 hours to do, I think I'll do 2 more in a similar style to replace the 3 i bought that were hanging on my wall that I'm bored with.

it will be my first trilogy.

i'll ned to give them a name.

Very nice. Is the woman in the picture based on anyone, or just free thought?

A friend of mine who is an art professor in Pratt University in New York told me that when you sign a painting the sig then becomes part of the composition, you don't have to sign it.

I have been racking my brains trying to think of something abusive and derogatory to say about it but I can't think of anything because I like it.

Great effort. Colors are good. Composition not bad for a first try. One minor criticism.

Yes, I agree. The wall colour clashes and damages the effect of what I think is quite a good abstract. A frame maybe? Cheaper and easier is to paint the wall.

IMO a very good first attempt Noony.

The only comment that I can make is that the left eye (right as you look at the painting) draws my attention because it looks like a mistake (a blue smudge on the botton eyelid).

I have tried to not concentrate on that particular area but ultimately my line of vision is drawn back to it.

Don't know if it was intended but I would correct it if it was my work.

Other than that you ought to be proud of your work.

Was that a one off 4 hour session? Sometimes it's good to walk away and come back to a piece of work. Just a thought.
