    Unhappy Slut Culture

Toward the end of last year I was sat in the cavernous Gullivers on Soi 5 where I picked up a photocopy of a very well known UK tabloid, The Sun - the best selling newspaper in Britain and therefore a reflection on the mentality of the majority of the populus.

The day previous there had been a natural disaster somewhere, I think it was an earthquake in India, but I can’t quite remember because my attention was seized by the front page headline which informed me in huge bold type that there had been a lesbian kiss on Coronation Street a (soap opera for those who don't know), full story pages 5 and 6 it said. 'Fucking hell - there's two more pages of this shite???'

In the pages between 2 and 5 was a story about some teenager who raped a pensioner, a woman who poisoned her mother for financial gain and an insulting cartoon of the queen.

It was then that I came to the frightening realization that Thailand is already leagues ahead of us, especially when it comes to culture, their attitude to family, their respect for their elders and their monarchy and their attitude to sex, but it was the front page that dominated all other stories, including world affairs. LESBIAN KISS.

We like to think we live in a society where such things are no longer taboo and are discussed openly, which they are, but in the same manner as giggling children in a primary school playground. It seems that the UK and US (who’s culture we have embraced) despite being considered countries that are leading the way are in fact quite behind. What is most frightening is that we are leading the way and in the same way we have allowed American culture to contaminate British culture, Thailand could be in danger of adopting the worst aspects of both. Observing slogans on the T-Shirts of students on the Skytrain is a good way of studying the gradual growth in Thai culture climate change where over the past few years Sex and the City arrived on HBO and Tata Young released that awful, 'Sexy Naughty Bitchy Me' - cheers for that Tata, no doubt Britney was an influence.

Let's stick with T-Shirts for now... Thai guys usually wear black T-Shirts with their rock idols emblazoned, be they national, international or dead. The girls tend to go for slogans on crop-tops, and I have noticed in the four years I have known Bangkok that slogans such as CUTE GIRL, LOVELY HEART and FRAGILE – HANDLE WITH CARE, have gradually become less cute as the western ‘Raunch Culture’ gets it’s foot in the door, filling market stalls and impressionable teenage torso’s with messages such as NO ANGEL, SUPER BITCH and IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOU ARE TOO CLOSE...

Granted, it’s fashionable to have a foreign language print in most countries and because of this, many young Thai’s who are not well versed in the English language have no idea what they have written on their chest; I once saw a kid of about five wearing a T-Shirt saying FINISH YOUR PUSSY – THERE ARE HORNY KIDS IN EITHIOPIA.

To see what Thai kids could be wearing in a couple of years one only needs to return to the UK and have a look around a shopping centre or market.

The following slogans are an example:

    COMPLETE AND UTTER BITCH

YOU ARE THE WEAKEST LINK – FUCK OFF

I’M NOT BEING RUDE YOU’RE JUST INSIGNIFICANT

WHY DO WEIRDOS ALWAYS SIT NEXT TO ME?

ALL MEN ARE IDIOTS – I MARRIED THEIR KING

FUCK OFF – I’VE GOT ENOUGH FRIENDS ALREADY

DON’T JUST STARE, BUY ME A DRINK

CHEF IN THE KITCHEN – SLUT IN THE BEDROOM

    I DON’T DO COMMITMENT

SO MANY MEN, SO LITTLE TIME

    And the troubling…

SPERM BANK – MAKE YOUR DEPOSITS HERE

These are ALL genuine T-Shirt/Crop top slogans, now what the fuck is going on??? What message is this giving out?

Where has all this angst and nastiness come from and where are we going to see it next?

No wonder western culture is fucked, the younger generation are screwed up and more and more people are coming to Thailand to get away from it all, even the decent British girls who don't subscribe to all that bollocks, all that greed from printing companies seizing the oppertunity to profit from pop cultures pressure to fit in and be 'sexy', 'naughty' and 'bitchy'.

Perhaps we come to Thailand to get away from the bullshit - like I said in a recent thread about religion, strong people find their own way and although there is bullshit in Thailand, it's honest bullshit and usually only effects those who are asking for it.

    Bhudda help us all.

There are more newspapers than the Sun in the Uk - The Times/Telegraph/Guardian are among the best in the world. Just because you and your chums read the Sun in pick up bars like Gullivers does not mean that this represents Uk culture in general. I for one have never read The Sun nor watched coronation Street. I did however used to look at Page 3 when I was pre-pubescent. Some school mates used to bring it in to school.

Basically Scampy I am sure that you feel you have made some radical observation about Western culture which has escaped the rest of us but in reality the world is made up of lots of different people with different tastes - that is a benefit of western culture. You can choose what you want to read etc.

Are you seriously saying that The Nation or Bangkok Post is better than the Times???

You should read the first paragraph again, I said The Sun was the biggest selling paper in the UK, not the only one.

I was in Gullivers having a drink with a friend who is anything but a bar hopper. Magazine owner and loyal boyfriend.

Just because you and your chums read the Sun in pick up bars
Which line in my above post inspired this comment?

I could hardly escape the headline and were I a regular eader of The Sun then this post wouldn't exist because I wouldn't have been shocked and surprised at what I read.

None of my 'chums' are Sun readers either, this includes you, and I'm surprised at your reply to what I thought was a valid topic which is a sad reflection on contemporary youth culture.

in reality the world is made up of lots of different people with different tastes
How can you validate that statement?

I could have written about the increase in Japanese cuisine in Thailand and you could have said the same thing, you could apply that to anything mate, this is a specific topic based on observation.

Just out of curiosity, which paper sells more, The Times or The Sun? If the UK is anything like Australia, the trash papers are more popular...

A lot of the t-shirt slogans are just simply street fashion, methinks, and I would say that Japan influences them just as much as the west does these days.......maybe even more. The crappy t-shirts sold at tourist areas are designed for the stupid farang market, and I don't think most thais would be seen dead in them...

Concerning the topic of western 'slut culture', I think scampy has a point. It all started when women burnt their bras back in the 70's, and wanted to act like blokes. Family values went out the door, marriage has become an 'old fad', and there are loads more pooves....

About the slogons on t-shirts I do believe it is a fashion statement to have some English text on show. It appears the English language and lifestyle is fashionable.

Just watch some of the Thai soap operas, some of the clothing the actors wear and the surroundings they are set in. I rarely see any Thai style villages on the televison or TV as some Thai people like to call it in English style Thai.

And even Thai songs I'll be listening to and all of a sudden I'll hear "love" or "miss you" something in English for a bit of fashion. Many Thai singers have one song completley in English!

I was at a Thai friends party a while back and I was the only farang there and I was asked to sit with a University student whom claimed to speak excellent English, she and her family had been bragging about it apparently. It just goes to show many Thai people love to speak English and live the lifestyle.

A t-shirt I saw a Thai man wearing a few weeks back had "Nirvana" on it he happened to be a friend of my brother so I asked him about the band and what songs he liked to start some convo and he was completley clueless about what his t-shirt represented. I believe many of the Thai females you speak of too would be clueless also.
    Welcome to the jungle!

    I worded that wrongly.

What I meant to say is, many of the Thai females you are speaking of that wear the t-shirts with the slogons on would be clueless to what they translated to in English.

Actually it was 'Finish your pussy, there are HORNY kids in ETHIOPIA'

Must admit I tickled me also at the time.

I'm still waiting to see a bird wearing an 'I SHAGGED SCAMPY' T-Shirt but maybe they don't want to advertise it.

'The Gentleman Scamp' would make a reasonably interesting brand.

    The Gentleman Scamp condoms
    The Gentleman Scamp panatella cigars
    The Gentleman Scamp gin
The Gentleman Scamp eau de cologne
    GS Magazine.

You could license it out, like Pierre Cardin or Richard Branson's "Virgin", or restrict it to proprietary in-house products.

Of course, until you've done the simple paperwork and registered the brandname, there's nothing to stop others commandeering it.

    eau de cologne
Why would I want to use the French language to sell my products?

Who says I haven't already for very similar purposes?

Creating a forum handle across a range of forums wouldn't count - legally.

You'd have to register some sort of copyright.

    Interesting. Where did you register?

Even in Thailand, copyright law is actually quite strong and protective.

As we know people seldom enforce, but if your copyrights are infringed in Thailand and you sue, you will probably win.
