Would you sell 10 years for a million pounds?

I dunno why I found myself thinking about this last night, but it would be tough to predict various people's response to the question.

The rest of your life, or a shorter life as a millionaire?

Irrefutable proof that Smeg is a teacher.
That question comes directly from an ESL resource book along with such other beauties as would you play Russian roulette (just 1 shot) for a million and would you chop of your little finger for a tenner.

Maybe I'm an ESL resource book author

Nope, a friend in the UK asked me this question last year, and I only got round to actually thinking about it last night. He earns 100k pounds per year, hence 1 million (ish) in 10 years. He lives for his job, although admits to not liking it much, but does very little else in his life. Thus he admitted to wishing he could skip the next 10 years and then just have the cash as a protected lump sum without having to go thru the graft of earning it and those 10 years of expenses where he will probably spend it all.

Either way it's a tricky question.

I think being able to choose the manner of your death would add to the appeal of the trade.

^ Ahh, yes, choosing the manner of your death. To diverge for a moment, I think I'd like to die from exhaustion in a bouncy castle surrounded by giggling, naked girls, some on space hoppers, others trying to wrestle the space hopper girls off their mounts, the whole occasion being generously lubricated by several buckets of extra virgin olive oil...

And now back on topic, I'd sell 10 years from my past, but not my future.
The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

But you wouldn't be the same person you are today if you sold your past. Even small changes make you the person you are at present let alone the big changes.

Maybe that is the intention, or maybe it indicates that he is optimistic that "thiiiiiings, can only get beeeeeeeeter" as D-ream once sang.

doesn't it work on a presumption you know when you were going to die? What if I said no and died 2 years later? Boy would I be kicking myself...

This is more or less a question for teenagers who seem to have an unlimited lifetime left.

Hey Icy. I'm not so sure. I could probably do without 25 to 35, stuck in a well-paid but dull job in London. OK, I'd have to give up the little pot of money I made then, but I'd have a million to replace it, so that's ok. I don't think I'd be a different person. Would have avoided a messy involvement with that woman in Clapham, which was always going to be a bad idea.

And actually, Smeggy's right - I'm enjoying life immensely right now, and it's going to get better, too!

    It's true though.
it occured to me the other day that I started university exactly half my lifetime (18 years) ago. i don't know where the time has gone since.
Granted i have done rather a lot, but that first uni day also seems like yesterday.
Time seems to get quicker with age and also with enjoyment.

i think catch 22 summed it up, when yossarian suggested taking up a hobby that made you miserable to slow down the passing of time.
Maybe I'll start doing cross stitch tomorrow.

Why start bullying Smeg? He has started a new thread with no offending of any members then you start giving him some abuse.

Many members complain about Smeg but I rarely see him give any member any nasty comments. He usually handles the constant comments similar to what you have just posted fine but now and again gets quite annoyed, I would too!

    Just an observation.

I am not averse to a little drinky-poo in the company of chums, so as long as I get, say, an hour's notice, I should be there too.

    Don't worry IM.
As you can see by his Thai-style use of language, its a fair question

Would I sell 10 years for 1 million pounds?

No way, I could make that much in 5 years if I put my mind to it.
