True Friends, Gone But Not Forgotten

Posted on a thread yesterday and quoted about what an old-timer in Bangkok had told me during his (at the time) 32 years here.

Memories come flooding back about my old aquantances here and the chap that come to mind first was Brian Baldwin. Brian established Castrols business in this neck of the woods, held audience with the Queen when she come to Asia but you could still find him moving from bar to bar in Patpong on most afternoons.

I don't know how many other posters knew him but Brian was for me my best friend, my mentor and when I first come here and right to the end of his life a real character and was always one of the boys.(O.B.E as well)

Another one who I sorely miss is Arwin Roberts better known as "Hatch" in Bangkok. Died suddenly the december before last and Bangkok doesn't seem the same without him. A great partner in crime when out on the town, an absolute brilliant and a true and trusting friend.

Both these gentleman had a great influence on me, as I am sure they had on many others and at the same time I don't think they would have objected to my posting their names on Teak Door.

Any others wish to pay tribute to friends who have passed on?

Yesterday, being a Friday, and being November 15th, i reached for my phone as i smiled, anticipating a lengthy bout of bollock talking with a great friend and kindred spirit.

Blackgang left us about 3 years ago. I still fondly remember listening to his tales of the US and Korea. I still want to strangle his kunt of a 'wife'.

Peterg Joyce AKA Happy Man here, was a true friend for over 15 yrs. A great cook ( whenever lamb comes to mind so does Happy Man), avid deep sea fisherman and one of the best story tellers I've ever come across.

Such a varied career he had, from side-car racing in England to burying corpses in Africa with a bulldozer to an on-call adjuster for Loyd's of London, a superb mechanic and a lover of animals and someone you could truly depend on.

I raise my glass of gin and tonic to his memory regularly.

I knew Hatch quite well in his early days here in Bangkok. He worked for various piling and foundation companies in the mid-nineties that I dealt with. I even rented a few cars and pickups from him when he was with Q-Cars but lost track of him as I spent less time in Bangkok. It was quite a shock to see his memorial posted in the Londoner pub. A true gentleman and sorely missed.

Well burning another mate today.

Ian (Dakadan) Christensen died suddenly last week after having a stroke at 57 years young.

He was well known around Maprachan Lake, a bigger then life character, never minced his words and will be missed by those that knew him well.

For those that did know him and wish to pay their respects please PM me before 2.00pm today and I will pass on the funeral details.

Rest in Peace Mate.

A good friend of mine dies a few months ago in his early 50's. Gerd was a great chef, working initially as the Head of Catering at Phuket International Airport, before setting up his own business importing/selling classy western food and ingredients to the classy hotels on the island.

Gerd used to visit me at my hotel and bring me free 'off-cuts' from the latest and tastiest food that he had cooked. He liked a decent cup of coffee and we would chat over a cappucino whilst he told me what a twat my (now) ex-wife was.

Gerd was on Patong beach when the 2004 tsunami struck and ended up clinging to a large, 2000 litre empty water tank as it bobbed around in the waters.

Nice guy, died of diabetes (no doubt brought on by eating rich food etc). Bloody young to go though.

I just got a call from Wayne to inform me that his dad, Boysen Bill has passed away peacefully at home today at the age of 85.

I must say I have a tear in my eye as I only a few days ago had a few ales with him and he seemed really happy and fit.

He come from the same place as my dad's family (Kent) and he loved to show me pictures of him digging out the Cliffs Of Dover for the battle with Hitler. Actually the man could remember things that happened 60 years ago in detail but had problems with something that hapened 10 minutes ago. Not a joke but I marvelled at his history.

Such a lovely fellow and he will remain in my heart until I meet my maker.

For those that knew him I will post up details about the funeral arrangements and hopefully get a lot of people down in Boysen Bill's Bar in Soi Crocodile in Pattaya to celebrate his life.

Rest In Peace Bill. Luv Ya!

Sad news mate, although Bill was no spring chicken. I remember Bill well- he'd sit quietly at his bar there, keeping his own counsel and thoughts amid all the banter. An old codger lost in his own thoughts and beer, you would probably think. Than he would come out with something, quietly, and you would realise he was well in touch with the conversation all along- and probably knew more about it than you! An old sea dog too- I bet he had plenty of stories to tell, and I wish I had got to hear more of them.

Please pass my condolences to Wayne and the family mate. I'll raise a glass to him up here in Ubon.
