A brief description of the qualities/personality of the thai man you most respect

I do some part time work at a local high school. the man who supervises the 20 or so english teachers has my respect. he is a down to earth muslim, with a willingness to speak frankly and irreverently about the system we coexist in. he also speaks with intelligence and candor about muslim, buddhist and/or xian relations and short commings. he runs a good/short staff meeting and always has an agenda.

who is the thai man you most admire and what are the qualities you find interesting or appealing?

A friend of mine that owns a car dealership, has farming interests, and is also active in local politics.

All of this and he never fails to make time for his family (young boy and girl) no matter how busy he is. Has his priorities sorted. Great sense of humour too.

Honestly, there isn't a single Thai man I respect or trust. Plenty of honest, hard-working, nose-to-the-grindstone Thai women. Men, none.

To be fair, though, I don't go out of my way to befriend them either. So I'm not saying they don't exist, but I've never met one.

Guy I bought my land off spends his day times selling corn and 4 hours every evening taking care of the local kids interests in his own time.

Doesn't drink or smoke and doesn't have a great deal of worldly possessions.
Runs a number of sports clubs and the kids clearly adore him.
Makes a lot of people happy.

A friend of mine has a scruffy motorcycle repair shop. He works 14 hour days, 6 days per week. His girlfriend is pregnant with their second child. At the end of the each day he gives the takings to his gf who goes religiously to the bank to pay the money in. (he keeps a hundred baht for a couple of cans of beer). He makes about 50k baht per month. They live a normal life with no trappings of wealth and no desire to flaunt it. He has done everything in his power to help me, mostly with motorbike issues including supplying expensive parts/repair at his trade supply cost and not the retail price.(50% saving). Always joking about something, virtually everything he says has some kind of piss taking or sexual undertone
He talks candidly about farangs and the "Amazing Thailand" tag that his country has. He tells me that the women here dont show farangs enough respect and that the greedy ones who demand money for expensive items are an embarrasment to normal Thai people.
A very interesting guy, he's 34 and from Songkhla. He has my respect for sure, for many reasons.

^ He is the exact opposite of my mate who ran a bike shop in town.

He never opened it up. Spent all his money and gave his wife 100B a day.

NiOnlue worked when he needed some wedge, which was normally three days after he last got paid and blew it on whores and beer.

Had two wives and three kids.

Peeak the dive master who worked for me in my dive business.

Honest, hard working, smart, friendly , genuine, willing to do anything and all round good guy.

Mama Pim , daughter in law Jim, son Kim and Papa.

Honest as the day was long, loyal , generous, always helpful and never complaining and truly wonderful human beings.

I've been very lucky as met some incredible Thai people in my early years and this has carried me forth until today.

Ive just toured Isaan for the first time and once again associated myself with some lovely Thai people who adopted me and never asked for anything in return.

I respect the Thais as my experiences over the last 20 years have been far in the positive and people like Tex who throw up rhetoric that they have never met a good Thai amuse me.

    Sorry Tex,
But you've missed out on some great opportunity's by having a negative attitude towards the Thai people and you must realise that they pick up on your negativity, you will never be accepted in Thailand with your present attitude as you just dont cut it.

Lighten up mate and make an effort to assimilate.

You dont live in pattaya by any chance.

I get the gist of what this thread is sayin' and I would like to say that there are two types of Thai men I have respect for, MY friends whom I met in London years ago who have western values and were western educated, and then there are hard working taxi driver types who are honest and decent people (not that many I hear you say) but the reason I mention the latter is due to two epileptic fits I have suffered in Pattaya in the last ten days:

First one was just after a Pharmacy had angrily refused to sell me a Diazepam tablet, pretending he didn't know what I was on about, I begged him and he refused. As I was rushing to a chemist I knew WOULD sell me one (I was silly to leave home without them I know) the fit happened and I managed to set myself down in a sitting position outside the Wat next to Pattaya Tai / 2nd Road junction. 5 Minutes later I came round with two motorsai guys handing me my contents of my pockets which had fallen out (cash, wallet, phone etc) making sure I was ok. They wanted to take me to the hospital free, but I'm so used to these fits that I assured them I was ok and went on my way after I had regained my memory.

The Second fit was on Jomtiem Beach Road and pretty much the same happened but so much faster that ingesting the diazepam would have been useless anyway.
Again I came round with a bunch of motorsai guys helping me again and they waited with me until I could remember who I was and regained my memory.

These fits are a pain in the arse.

Very nice story Pat and I also have one for Pattaya.

In my 20 years of coming to Thailand I have only been to Pattaya 3 times, that was between 1990 and 1992, ain't been back since, was only there to do business and maybe you guys know this hotel as it was called the Downtown Hotel or Inn on second road.

Anyway, off I go to see our new partner in Naklua on my rented motor cycle, proceed to drink fire water with him, Dave Doll was his name from Oil Field Services, I'm sure some of you long termer's must know him as hes been there forever and is a big name in the diving game.

Anyway, we proceeded to get absolutely hammered in a very serious way and the next thing I know I've smashed my bike into the car park of the downtown hotel and god knows how I got that far.

I can vaguely remember the security guard carrying me into my room and the next thing I recall is awaking with an almighty skull crushing hangover and seriously thinking it was hospital time.

Anyway, the first thing I think about is my wallet and my bike keys but they where not in my room.

I shit myself as I had a heap of cash in the wallet and I'm thinking I'm going to have to pay for this foking bike not to mention the 8000 dollar wedge I had on my credit card.

I bolt down stairs to the reception and blurt out a drunken apology to the staff and ask if they know the security guard who could have my keys and wallet.?

Next thing I know, the lovely lady pulls out an envelope, returns my wallet, keys all in tact and not a baht missing, tells me, Sir you must be careful in Pattaya as theres some bad people.

    Anyway,
That night I approached the security guard kissed his feet and give him a nice wedge as he could of been living in the Sheraton on my money.

True story dudes and thats why Tex's story don't rub.

Theres some top fellas and lady's in this country.

Nui, ex-heroin addict and "very bad man". Has six kids with three different women. The latest straightened him out and saved him from a violent and/or gruesome and/or early death. Spends his days now driving a songthaew round Chiang Mai, fishing and playing with his grandkids. Good English (from his days living in Amsterdam), knows all the best little off-the-beaten-track places to take tourists around Chiang Mai, doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs. Interesting to talk to about his country and his old life, but never rams anything down your throat. Knows when you want him to talk and when you want him to shut up. Never overcharges. Catches some whopping fish.

How many do you want? I know quite a few, all remarkable men in their own way. This 'Thai men are losers' idea is a crock. There are some bad ones. There are some very good ones. Most fall in between. Like most of us.

OK, I'll give one (some of the others might not like me telling their stories). Khun Sonyodt volunteers at the local dog pound (not us). He's the only person there that gives a shit about the dogs & he volunteers there every single day, giving the dogs medical treatment that they might not get, if it weren't for him. He also helps out at a local temple (some of the nicest looking temple dogs I've ever seen), helps at the local neutering clinic every time the vet is down here & takes care of a huge amount of dogs himself (with his wife). He's a truly good guy & I don't know where he finds the time or energy.

I have a very good friend (among several who are candidates for this thread), who is a Property magnate, with very significant holdings in Bangkok, and Phuket.

The most modest and unassuming guy you'd ever hope to meet. He's late 50s, but looks about 50. Thai Chinese, but doesn't have any patience for that Thai-Chinese shit.

He's just a good businessman and friend.

He does ballroom dancing in Lumpini Park on Sundays with his Mia Noi.

Call me a cynic Terry BUT I tend to veer towards Tex's veiw than your own. I have been associated in business or have employed around 45 Thai men, all of these guys seemed to be freinds at one time, guys you could happily share a beer and conversation.
As it turned out All of these Thai men, wth one exception, were happy to steal from me when the opportunity arose.
In some cases it was just outright emezzlment of 100's of thousands of baht, but many it was helping themselves.
The one exception was X, who at one time was the owner of a Thai superbike company and even tho' he was a Thai national was ripped off by his fellow countrymen to the point he was forced to close his business.
I spoke to X recently, he said, even tho I was born here, and lived for 35 of my 55 yrs, (he was educated in the UK) I don't know outside my immediate family, one Thai man who I would unconditionally & completely trust.
So forgive me if I seem to be generalising when I say, with a few exceptions, given the right opportunty they are in the main a bunch of thieving and certainly lying ****s.
