Thread: "Farang" An Insult Or A Term Of Affection?

To answer the OP, its all in the intent, some people say it meaning no harm ... therefore no harm done, just ignorance really.

some people mean it with venom, then it really is an insult.

My kids are horrified if they get called Thai.

One looks very Thai but he's welsh as far as he's concerned.

The little one who looks more farang sometimes thiks he's English.

He does get punished for that.

As for the term, it does not come from the French on their way to Vietname, it comes from the Persian word ferengi.

exactly, it's not the word, but the way it has been used in the UK as a degrogatory word has made it an insult. the australians don't see it that way.

Same with farang, there are times you can be referred to farang and you know it is derogatory. It's not the word, it's the manner in which it is used.

So if I was to say "have a nice day paki" with a smile, would that be acceptable ?

Agree, this could have been a more interesting discussion about Farang's Luk Kreung kids and their attitude to racial stereotypes and labels.

The thread title gave me the same initial reaction as DrB0b.

No, that can't be right. I've seen Ferengi on Star Trek and they look more Welsh than Persian.

That would be me. But it was in reference to my kids being called "half" by Japanese. They're grown now, both living in the States.

I still think these kids benefit from exposure to twice as much language, culture, travel, food, life experience than their (whole, pure, 100%, original) namecalling counterparts. Nothing half about them.

Most of my friends here are Pomys with a few Taffys and Jocks thrown in between. For some reason don't get on too well with the Aussies that come here.

Terms such as "Paki" I have heard being used on many occasions in what I feel was both for a derogatory purpose and in other ways light hearted banter.
I suppose a term can be altered in meaning quite dramatically by the way it is verbally delivered.

You can also call someone a silly cnut and get away with it as light hearted banter.
Call a Thai a "Heeee" with a rising tone and see the famous Thai smile quickly disappear from their gobs.
