    Why smeg hates TEFLers

Well, I don't, but I think the industry sucks.

Its simple. There are too many unqualifed, illegal losers dragging down the level of education, the image, and the salaries.

I'll be happy if this immigration clean-up takes place. It will see a fair percentage of teachers kicked out of the country, which will mean supply of legals far outstripped by demand, which will lead to higher salaries. Any schools wishing to recruit will HAVE to obtain work permits (two I worked for didn't bother, hence part of my passion for this), meaning that eventually all teachers should be better paid, and legal. What is the problem with that? (other than the initial round of "garbage collection")?

    I agree with you Smeg.

Being pissed over on the work permit front must be a bitch.
I haven't left the country for over 5 years, it makes you feel a little like you are kind of wanted..sort of.

    It won't happen again.

Yeah, us WPs are "Wanted", but only to do local weath-making stuff that the locals can't do themselves. If they could, we'd be frog-marched to Don Muang before you can say CRAP.

An independent researcher compared working as a TEFL teacher to being a hairdresser or a prostitute. His results are summarized in the link below.

TEFL n the states, My wfe got a job by saying, "Yeah, i got a degree." She worked with a Cople a mexicansand some chick frm Japan. TEFL is a joke. Soe of the folks here have proper jobs in proper schools ad actually work in education. The other schools that hire itenerant TEFLers wuld fold. Thing is 30K can get you by decently inthe povinces and there will always be willing workers.
And these guys provide some english language skills to people tha would otherwise go without. Jobs n the education field and teaching in institutions of higher learning will always pay comparatively well. The other jobs ain't never gonna get out of the 20 - 40 K range. That's just a pipe dream.
Like eliminating the untrained TEFLers is gonna raise the level of education; you gotta be kidding right? Have you looked at the level of education here? 'Twas this way before and it's not gonna change any time soon. The powers that be do not want an educated population. These folks start thinkin' and theres gonna be ahelluva lot more trouble than there is now. I wold love to see it happen, but not in my lifetime i think.
I never took a job I didn't think I could be very good at (except that two weeks I taught once). ONCE. I could never teach well. So I never looked for another job in the field. In fact i haven' looked for another J-O-B.
i want a job I'll go back the USA. Even if the Gov't took half my salary I could afford a hell of alot more than I can here. Rather be poor here than middle class there lot's of folks feel the same way. Uou got a 70k/mo+ job here, them folks ain't no danger to you; so whatchoo worryin' about? Leave 'em the fuck alone. Really ain't hurtin no one. Stop blamin' 'em for low salaries. It just ain't the case.
70k what's that? $1750 US? Used to take me two days to earn that back in the world, sometimes three. If you came here lookin' to get rich, you made a wrong turn, Jack.

I think you are being a little over cynical Frankie.

Thailand has in the past had a large proportion of its population working in agri jobs and low skill production. For this type of economy a highly educated workforce is not required and to be honest cannot be afforded.

As Thailand's industry becomes more technical however it will require more highly educated people to service it.

Thaksin, to his credit, recognised the above and stated when he came to power that Thailand would not be able to compete with countries like Vietnam and China in areas like garment production, and that he would use Singapore as a role model for the future Thai economy.

These sorts of changes are incremental you cannot simply turn a country's economy around overnight.

    I may be cyical but
Thailand has in the past had a large proportion of its population working in agri jobs and low skill production. For this type of economy a highly educated workforce is not required and to be honest cannot be afforded.
kinda proves the point. But we're not even talkin highly educated. We are talkn abut people that can read write and understadn that the written word is method of communication of information. This concept is beyond a large portion of hte population. They can read signs and for many not even that.
The bulk of the jobs in the US are agri business low skill production and service jobs as well. i thnk you'll find this to be the case in any medium to large country. An educted populace is one that will understand it's own poverty and begin to hunger for more for a larger piece of the pie. They might just demand a more international driven economy; be less willing to settle for such a tiny slice of the pie.

Thaksin, to his credit, recognised the above and stated when he came to power that Thailand would not be able to compete with countries like Vietnam and China in areas like garment production, and that he would use Singapore as a role model for the future Thai economy.
Havng a small amount of experience nthe garmet industry and havng been married to one that has made it her caeeer, I can say that Thailnd lead China and Vietnam in the garment industry until it had recently lost it's position due it's Xenophobic business prctices and lack of investment in education adn infrastructure. Only Five years ago Vietnam was behind Thailand in it's ability to produce complex garments and started with new modern knitting machings that set them well above the market for producing tee-shirts.

Thailand cannot compete with Singapore and Taksin is talkin' more populist crap out his ass. Much noise has been made about improving education. But noise is not doing. as more and more folks gain the ability to think independently the policies and ractices will come more and more under considertion.

Singapore's financial community, much better geographical position and the fact that it sis simply a city state has allowed it, perhaps forced it to become what it is a finance, shipping and business center. I do not see how Thailand can compete with an laready established business and shippig center when it is "off the beaten path" and is doing little to educate it's folk. Singapore is a City-State of a small area without the infrastructure requirements of a country the size of Thailand.

The model to follow was the model of Vietnam and China before it would have been following. They had the Garment, formed metals and potential heavy manufacturing capabillities but failed to invest in upgrading and stayin current. They have failed in leveraging their base for the future and now are n a situation of playing "catch-up."
Turning anywhere in Thailand, central enough to quallify, into a shippng hub is impossible, the Gulf of Siam is long sail, better to ship goods to S'pore for shipping to the west. They lost on that one. Their financial situation is a joke. The cost in time and money in doing business here through letter of credit, Wire transfer or other negotiable instruments is way off base.

That will and must change. The change will not come from above but I believe that it will only come from the grassroots sector. There are young people today that no longer toe the line and follow their parents.

Think it was about three years ago that someone high up then said Ok let them have the low-end, we will build a reputation on quality. Remember japanese quality of the 50s and 60s? Are the people running this country stupid? I don't fuckin' think so.

The thing is the rich make enough as it is. They do not need to compete in the world market and be a leader. They can do very nicely on the low hanging fruit as long the population is not educated to the degree they desire more from their lives. Once that happens thes fat cats will have to either face up and invest the money in competitve technology and an educated workforce.

AND they will have share more of the profits with the workers. I can assure you these people know what has to be done, they are loathe to spend their own cash to receive a smaller piece of the profits, they are loathe to allow foreign investment in that would assure a competitive edge for this country. They are doing just fine and could give a rats ass about the llittle man.

By tellng them we cannot compete with China, etc. and we wil lcompete with S'pore. Taksin is feeding the people a load of shit. He knows it. The economic powers chose to not stay ahead of the game, chose not to spedn their private stash of coin or allow foreigners to make a bit of cash with an investment and now it has cme up to bite 'em on the ass.

There are yong people in this country today that like their MTv, VH1 and whatever it is they watch these days. believe it or not these tings are the seed to self education. The desire to be cool also give them an inquisitiveness a desire to know and understan Dwhat the world is like out side.

The longer "they" can keep the popuation dumbed down the loger they cansurvive. Things like the internet, the press, and television is heavily censored for a supposedly free-press country. Internet Pornography censorship? what else is being filtered? What about the print press here? You can not prevent the tide of information from educatng the people but these fuckers sure are tryin'

Nope the economic powers that be do not want eh population educated and tehy are dong whatever they can get away with to prevent it.

Fuck! that was a lot! be damned if I'm gonna proof-read it

Decent EFL instructors will find employment at the better schools that are organized and have decent curriculums, etc.

The bad ones will be at lessor tiered schools.

It's not that different than any other industry.

    English teachers in Thailand...

The small percentage are legit with work permits, but even these guys are just sexual perverts who go to nana and cowboy after work to get as much flesh as they can, and as much drink as they can during the happy hours. Are these the kind of people you want teaching your kids... ?

I've known a few teachers who a properly qualified with experience, which is alot better than the Tefl idiots, but they're still the same kind of sexual deviant as the rest.

The rest without qualifications and experience are just the dregs of the barrel, earning a measly wage and then go drinking and whoring, ending up borrowing money from anyone who is stupid enough to lend it.

Of course it would be much better to employ Catholic priests for example, who get their jollies IN the class.

I think a change of jobs might be in order. I honestly cannot remember the last time I had a chance to get a "happy hours" beverage

Obviously teaching English in Thailand is a step up the ladder of life enjoyment
