Farang Adopted: Can This Be True????

I met a farang this morning while having breakfast this morning. During the conversation he tells me that he has Thai citizenship because he was adopted by a Thai lady. He is 36 years old and claims to have been adopted by his girlfriend's grandmother who is 60.

He produced a Thai id and house registration.

The guy said that the adopting parent has to be at least 15 years older than you and it got him citizenship in about a year.

    Possible? Or not.......

    H'mm, potentially very interesting.
I'd like to add Thai citizenship to my collection, otherwise the status of a farang here is basically pretty shaky.

Where are you going to find a 107 year old to adopt you ?

That makes you wife the same age as your daughter? If you are adopted by your mother in law your wife then becomes you sister.

It sounds very incestuous to me!

Hmmm...I have heard this one many times over the years. So far all have been BS. Next time you see him ask to see his Thai ID!

I believe that some time ago if you were born in Thailand ( like in the US) you could get Thai citizenship

Possible I guess, previous to about 1974 (i think) a foreigner born in thailand was given citizenship, a mate of mine has it.

As to a farang adoption, why not? I recall my missus used to do volunteer work at an orphanage on Rama IX - and they had a farang orphan there.

Yea, don't work for me either as My Mum in Law is dead, but even if she wasn't she would be 9 years younger than I.

I have been trying to find out more.
I strongly suspect that she will have to be legally married.

I don't know if that will be a problem or not.

    I found this.
A first hand account of someone being adopted.
The story has a few holes in it though
