Is it all for show - or what?

A friend of mine was in the bar today with a look of bewilderment on his face .

It appeared that he had recently bought his Thai wife a new car (Honda CRV) and paid extra to have that black film applied to the windows.
Last week they had an auction of "vanity number plates " here in Phuket- auspicious or lucky nimbers.
As a present he bought one for his wife - cost over 40,000 baht ( prat).

Today he tells me that his wife has had the film removed from the drivers side window so that people could see who was driving !!! WTF!!

    That set me thinking

Boom boxes in cars - full volume - with the window open ?

Wheelies on Honda Waves away from the lights ?

Stickers with "Blah Blah Racing Team" on Miras ?

Tyres on motorci's replaced with things that would look more appropriate on a push bike?

    What's it all about ?

Enlightenment and other examples welcomed !

It appears that she ordered the car with clear windows ( probably so people could see her driving a car with red plates on !) and he had to get them "Filmed" afterwards Thats what really pissed him off !!! LOL

Truck drivers seem to have trouble seeing out of normal glass here in Thailand and as such tinted windows are banned

    It's really no different anywhere.

Do you expect everyone to drive the same kind of car with AM/FM radios and no air conditioning for fear of appearing oppulent. According to your logic nobody should buy anything nicer than a Honda Jazz because they work just fine. Those bastards with BMWs and fog lights and CD players are just showing off.

Nothing wrong with wanting the best car/house/bike if you can afford it but I think it's the childishness of the 'I'm better than you because I have this' that some of us westerners view as rather laughable.

It's not their fault though, it's how they are raised.
"I'm an outsider by choice, but not truly. It's the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out. I'd rather be in, in a good system. That's where my discontent comes from: being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin' straight ahead. Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

Yes, but having a snobbish attitude is much different than putting a GPS in your car. I suppose it depends if you bought it to show off, or bought it to actually use it.

Most of the comments you make about Thai people seem to be about how you are better than them Scampy.

For sure. The young lady is experiencing the joy of first car ownership. Think we can all remember how we felt. A little pride, a bit of customization and the need to be seen all are part of the experience.
