    Non-Racism With a Twist

I've been given a letter from work stating that I must

Attend a meeting with the Head of HR regarding my recent conduct, I can bring a witness along if I want & that I may be dismissed from the company after the meeting
I'm going to get the push, for sure.

I know what this is about, as it raised a few eyebrows in the room at the time. While tring to close a sale, I told a client that our competitor, who was half the price I was asking him for, was only so low because they use "third-world monkeys from Mumbai" to do the work.

As soon as it came out of my mouth, I realised what I'd said, knew it would be taken out of context & as the letter I've received shows - I was right.

In my eyes, I've done nothing wrong. India is a third world country & when I called them monkeys I was refering to their ability to do the same job, not the colour of their skin. I'm not racist. I don't like Romanians, but that's it. Nevertheless, I'm going to get the sack because of some other person's interpritation of what I meant & I haven't got a leg to stand on.

I could wheel in one of my Paki mates as the witness at & tell them he doesn't find it offensive, but it would be putting him on the spot a bit if they are going to get rid of me, so I don't think I'll bother.

    Fired - for nothing.

referring to other people as monkeys is hardly nothing; whoever they are, it would be offensive

In addition, you used "third-world" instead of developing nation, another gaffe

never mind, you can always get another job if they fire you

maybe they will only give you a warning if you can explain that, when using the words "third-world monkeys" you were referring to the inexcusable behaviour of the competitor who cruelly trained monkeys to do the work of humans

you could borrow a monkey and take it to the meeting to show that some of your best friends are, indeed, monkeys.
    I have reported your post

    Yes

    That's what matters, isn't it?

It's the workmate who's grassed me up.

whoever they are, it would be offensive
They weren't in the room to be offended.

Well, if the client was not offended, and agreed that those monkeys could not be trusted, should be no problem

    just agree to counselling

They weren't in the room to be offended.
that is not relevant; people don't like gratuitous racist insults, even to those not present

I understand that but I was taken out of context.

The term monkey is banded about everywhere is not a particularly racist term unless you direct it at a black person.

    Like thay do at football.

    you're fucked

The easy solution to your hard problem is to shave off your pubic hair and present it as evidence during your hearing.

Tell them that its their fault you said that, and if they had sent you on an equalities and diversity course, you would have been educated on political correctness. Its worth a shot if know your going to get fired.

You ought to be fired for displaying such gross lack of basic education to a client.

    1. Not knowing the contributions India has made, and is still making, to the human experience. Mohenjo Daro and Harrappa for a start.

    2. Not knowing that monkeys aren't primates, as humans are. Any client's faith and respect in the service provider is diminished when competing service providers are denigrated as being non-human.

One of the axioms of customer contact is to never denigrate a) own management, b) current competitors, or c) past clients. Doing so makes the client believe a) you don't have confidence in the ability or future of your own product/service; b) bad-mouthing the competition indicates your product/service has no competitive advantage; c) you might say bad things about the client in future.

But you are in Sales, and sales people are expected to be coin-operated, full-of-their-own-charm, uneducated boors, so I will testify in your defense, as an Indian, that if you can correctly point to India on a globe, Indians will consider you have been remediated and are no longer offended.

Also, I want half the commission from the sale

    I'm not racist.
I could wheel in one of my Paki mates
you may not be a racist , but according to accepted standards these days , whether you like them or not , you certainly sound like one and you are definately a dinosaur completely out of touch with modern thinking.

words such as "third world monkeys", and "paki" are just not acceptable in any workplace anymore , and when talking to customers and clients would certainly cause a complete loss of respect from those clients.

the fact that you ignored these common decencies justifies your dismissal.

save your ignorance for the pub.

fired , for very good reason.

you may however find that your dubious verbal talents are in demand with the public relations department of the thai government , why not apply there for your next job.

I don't know who you were speaking to at the time or where? But it sounds like you also forgot that you were possibly in a room with several people who also may have been considered "third world Monkeys" by some and who may have been told as much by other foreigners so your reverberation of those comments at a minimum was very inconsiderate and insensitive and no doubt cut pretty deep with your co-workers..No matter what context you might have intended it..

Ever hear of the phrase "lost in translation" something you should consider a bit more seriously in the future..Live and learn..

There is an article in the Phuket Gazette about a Thai man that was stabbed to death the other day when he made a comment at someone else but was misunderstood by some other Thai guys and a fight ensued and he was killed, that instance only involved Thai's no foreigners. If they have difficulty even understanding each other to the point of fighting and someone dying, than what do you expect? If I were you I'd consider myself lucky, especially if you do just get off with a warning..
    Silent but deadly.....

Though you do get extra cultural sensitivity points for not calling it Bombay.

BTW, in case you haven't realized, quite a few people in the modern world (and certainly many many here on TD) have a spouse from a different race and multiracial children, and in the future you just might be talking to a client who is of this ilk.

Because groups of people haven't been taunted with the word 'Brits' before being thrown off a bridge or having their house firebombed. Plenty of shouts of 'Paki' though.
