also, as mentioned, when you exhale, if the hydrogen is mixed with oxygen, it is explosive

Helium kills you also but with probably less "pain".
Helium is neutral and does not interact with oxygen, so if you breath helium, you fill up your lungs and your brain does not realize there is no oxygen in it.
You just pass out and die without suffocating.
A favorite of "assisted suicides".
But well, maybe hydrogen deserves a try.
