    Is England an island?

People on one site that I'm a member of, are still arguing whether England is an island or not.

Oh for fcuks sake. You said that England is an island because it is 'surrounded by water.' England is not 'surrounded by water' as there is Scotland to the North and Wales to the West.
yes,stuart... and if you go back to where all this started, silly thread, someone said that the english were an island people, which the dominant english self-perception over the centuries would confirm, to which you responded with something like "england's not an island"... which is about as irrelevant to what the guy said as nasa's overlooking 100k of land border is to england's islandness...
as to the whole issue of what is "british" and what is "english", i suggest asking a "celtic" scot or welshman... in many ways, the notion of "britishness" is just part and parcel of english hegemony in the isles... now "briton", that's a whole 'nuther thing...
and just so we're clear, very few people, excepting perhaps geo-pedants and their ilk, are referring to the "island" when the say "great britain"... they, like the uk olympic committee, are referring to england, scotland, wales and northern island... but you knew that...
    Is England an island?

I recommend Sharon that you keep away from any sites that talk about England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland.

Your health will thank you for it.

Because an island is surrounded by water. England is not. Britain is an island with three countries on it, England, Scotland and Wales.

The British Isles is an archipelago consisting of the islands of Great Britain, Ireland and many smaller surrounding islands.Great Britain, sometimes simply Britain, is the largest island of the archipelago and England is part of this island, England is refered to as an Island nation.

Six nations is a misnomer, or a mathmatical error. Both plausible explanations.

Under British law the administrative unit known as Wales is defined as a country, it is not, however, a state, just a constituent country.

The UK outer regions have some of the trappings - football teams, banknotes, stamps, flags - of real countries. But it's all a sham.

In the Irish language Wales is called An Bhreatain Bheag (Little Britain). England is Sasana (Saxony) and Scotland is Alba or Albainn (The White Country)

California's San Bernadino county is 2.5 times larger than Wales. It's not a country, it's Britain's backyard.
