I'm wearing one those strings on my wrist that you get from the local wat and since I've been home people left and right have been asking me what the hell it is.

Random Friend: What's that?

Me: It's a blessing string. I got it in Thailand.

RF: Looks gay, what's it for?

Me: I got it at a temple in Phuket. You see, you make a wish and the monk will say a blessing and put this string on your wrist. If your wish comes true then you cut it off and go back to the temple and make a donation. Also it's custom to make a donation right after you get your blessing.

RF: Oh yeah, how long you had it then?

Me: About a year and a half.

RF: Dude, that's gay!

So, 2 questions: Is my explanation a load of crap? And should I drop all my friends who call me "dude" and use "gay" as an epithet?

It should either be removed after 3 days or left on until it falls off itself.

If you have washed your nuts, cock or ass with the hand which the string is on then you might aswel cut it off now as it has lost any blessing it recieved.

I have never been to a temple and been blessed or anything like that. The string I always end up with is from family in the village.

3 days to show respect and then cut it off I have been told.

Wear it until it falls off; I've had two, one from Japan and one from that hilltop temple in Hua Hin and I've certainly survived some rather close calls during that time... My ex-wife in Japan told me after it's done protecting you it will fall off.
