It's down.I'm in Shanghai at the moment back in HK weekend but doubt if I can open it from there also.

What was it about can you cut and paste? All the news channels block anything about Tibet, ads come on when sensitive information is broadcast.BBC radio/TV is blocked,CNN,MSN,Yahoo, the list go on....even ThaiVisa is down!

Shanghai Expat blocked the blog section and any forums are blocked one I subscribe to id the http://www.angrychineseblogger.com that's inaccessible also.

How can one thread within a site be blocked?

I thought I understood internet stuff, but would like an explanation of how the PRC govt can be so selective in blocking.

Think they can. Note every time you click on a thread your browser sends out a query through your ISP for the specific link. In the case of the link provided by mid, the word tibet is in the link address. Simple to deny access to any address containing the word tibet at the ISP level in China.

Believe me they can no idea how.I could open the Tibet 3 thread but not anymore it's bloody frustrating as I can't get into my Hotmail.

Tibet here is known as Xinjiang province needless to say even if I type Tibet in Chinese it is blocked.

^ I meant, a technical explanation (in general terms) of how the filtering is being implemented.

It seems unlikely that all traffic coming in is being scanned for keywords, because:

    1. much of the traffic is encrypted, and the horsepower required to force-decrypt on-the-fly is Significant!;

    2. a keyword scan is too porous; too many false-positives AND false-negatives. One test would be to see if a thread containing 'Tbet' passes through; another one with "antibetting".

    3. My guess would be that local demand is being fed from a PRC cache; if a request is made to something not in the cache, the request is sent to the real URL outside PRC, results put in the PRC cache after checking for banned content.

Vietnam did (does?) this several years ago, and the tip-off was that a request to a 'rare' URL (my company had a website solely for our clients to remote-control a demo office) timed-out, but was available after about 15 minutes, a little longer during lunch time! [presumably because the retrieved content had to be examined by a human before being allowed into the cache]

Perhaps I should ask this in the Tech forum?

That's funny because all links to gambling sites are blocked (illegal in China) not that I'm a gambler, also any links to porno sites.

There have been cases where the police have arrested people trying to link to 'sensitive' material sites,on a regular basis, even YouTube is periodically blocked.

I was searching for 'Sexy Back' the JT song and that's blocked bloody h_ell.

As a test, if a simple attachment (txt file) has the word 'tibet', will the entire email be blocked, or will the attachment be stripped off, or will the package be delivered?

the recipient advised that the pm's were no longer accessible , there was no mention of Tibet in the title , the body was cut 'n pastes of my last couple of posts , enclosed in quotes . I'm guessing that they wouldn't open as he knew there was a pm in his in-box .

we use search engine optimisation, this puts the thread title into the url, makes it real easy for them to block, tv doesn't use this, so they block the whole site.

I can't see how they could block pms or emails which they considered might have sensitive stuff, could you explain what you actually did.
