Thread: Stop staring you stupid

What is it with this place that everywhere you are there's always some gook fucker observing you - not looking casually but observing , as if they've never seen a white man before.

It doesn't seem to get any less irritating with the passage of time. It's the insualar mentality of the place - go to other countries in SEA (such as Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos) and you don't get this. Do these kunts here really want to be white so badly that they are trying to learn our mannerisms or what?

erm, same same happens here in Indo, and Tibet was fkcn mental.

we grew up with it's rude to stare,this obiously dosen't apply in thailand.
On the other cuff i get really pissed of with westerners who completly ingnore other westerners they just look away or look straight through you.
They just completley ingnore a smile, or friendly gesture.

^ that's true - probably because most of the Westerners out here are just weirdos though - or steroid boys.

yes, for sure it happens in other places but these are often where there are few tourists so you stick out as a novelty.

but here where it is full of white folk you'd have thought the locals would have got used to it by now - it's just the Us and Them mentality of Thailand which pisses me off somewhat.

That gets me too. I mean "we" have been a fixture of Siam for over 300 years you'd think we wouldn't be like Martians to them anymore. I think if I saw a monkey quietly drinking a latte and reading the Post at the Starbucks then that's exactly the kind of attention I would give that I get sometimes in this country.

I actually never felt watched in Thailand.
It sure can happen but pretty seldom compared to when I was in Africa and quite a few other countries.

I love it, and smile back or grin like an idiot. Sometimes I politely ask them, in English, if they have never seen a white boy before. Once, I got back, "You pink!"

Never worried about it in Thailand but Bangladesh almost drove me bonkers. Worse than just stare, they would just drop everything and come over to almost touching distance, in their hundreds sometimes, put their hands behind their backs and STARE.

In Bangladesh, if they could be staring at you only...
But they just surround you, by the hundreds as you said.
Wanting some money.

In over 20 years working in god forsaken ( if you believe in a divine being ) places in Africa and S America , I got used to it . Most places I was he only white man within 50 miles !

The way around getting pissed off by the constant staring was to get the kids laughing !!!

Learn a few simple "magic" tricks, pull funny faces ( didn't have to try hard on that side) and ignore the staring !
Pretty soon the adults soften up and there you go !

Probably wouldn't work in LOS though - I used to imitate the expressions on the "starers" faces and the kids would fall about. The starers mates would start taking the piss out of them and off we go !

PS I used to be dumped in remote areas with a Word Bank paid for generator and water well drilling rig and recruit local labour !

Another thing to add to the burden; teaching manners to the natives.

Travelling on the BTS, train, bus or MTR I often ended up staring at particularly beautiful girls and, when they made the occasional appearance, a ladyboy or two. Tried to keep it to the odd glance but their sheer beauty would quite simply prove too compelling.

So what's the big deal about them staring at us?

Personally, I think they are obsessed by our noses and gazing at us from afar they are also musing on why it is we are so white and have so much money yet they aren't and have so little.

I thought it was just because I had a faulty zipper on my jeans. Both pairs I had (cheap obviously) didnt have that locking thing fitted to the zip so the zipper would drop down every time I walked around for 10 seconds or more.

Thanks to complaints from my kids (who have now got to the age where I am embarassing to them when these things happen) I now have new zips fitted at a price slightly below what I paid for the original jeans so will try them out next time I am in Thailand.

Maybe you too have wardrobe malfunctions CE. Better check it out before you go slinging around nasty names like 'gook'

I was thinking it was because I was either drop dead handsome or butt ugly.

Though when walking down Sukhumvit all these girls keep saying "Hello hansum man", so must be the former.

India and China are worse, imho.
