Doc blames alcohol rub for drink charge

A New Zealand surgeon is blaming an alcohol-based sterilising liquid he used to wash his hands during operations for failing a roadside drink driving test.
Police say the case could have widespread implications if it's proven doctors regularly operate under the influence of alcohol absorbed in the course of their work.
Ian Denholm, of Masterton, north of Wellington, claims the sterilising rub he used during a series of operations on July 6 was absorbed into his kidneys and caused him to record 593 micrograms of alcohol (mcg) per litre of breath, well over the legal limit of 400 mcg.
Denholm, an orthopaedic surgeon, admitted drinking "a couple of wines" before driving but said the moderate amount he drank was not enough to put him over the limit, the Dominion Post reported.
He is denying a drink driving charge but did not have to appear in the Masterton District Court when the case was called on Thursday.
Police, who are awaiting details of tests the defence have done, say the case is unprecedented and could have worldwide implications, the paper said.
It quoted police prosecutor Greg Peters as saying there was potential for dire consequences one way or the other.
"The question will be asked, are these doctors operating under the influence of alcohol?" he said.
"That's basically what this defence team is saying the tests have proved."
It is not known when the case will return to court.

The man is a drunk and should be busted for drunk driving, just because he is a medicine man is no reason he can laugh at the laws while poor working stiffs got to set er out or pay healthy fines, maybe end up walking to work..

Total bullshit. It doesn't get absorbed through the skin (I should know I use enough of it) & how exactly does he explain how it ended up on his breath? He's lying & obviously desperate - otherwise why rely on something so ridiculous?

He should not be a doctor if he thinks that is possible.

Yea, good try Ian, but no one is going to be stupid enough (maybe cops excepted) to believe that load of old bullshit. I could satnd in a barrel of wine for the whole day and it won't even register on my breath let alone put me over the limit.

Thirty years ago, he might have got away with it, in some small backwater. But not today, not anywhere. Great excuse though, I wonder how many people laughed when it was read out in court.
