Tough day on the streets of Bangkok, and a scorcher to boot. Got home just now, knackered, and as sick as a dog, switch on the computer and a bit of classic feel good news cheered me up.

Dolphin rescues stranded whales - CNN.com

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A dolphin swam up to two distressed whales that appeared headed for death in a beach stranding in New Zealand and guided them to safety, witnesses said Wednesday.

The actions of the bottlenose dolphin -- named Moko by residents who said it spends much of its time swimming playfully with humans at the beach -- amazed would-be rescuers and an expert who said they were evidence of the species' friendly nature.

The two pygmy sperm whales, a mother and her calf, were found stranded on Mahia Beach, about 500 kilometers (300 miles) northeast of the capital of Wellington, on Monday morning, said Conservation Department worker Malcolm Smith.
Rescuers worked for more than one hour to get the whales back into the water, only to see them strand themselves four times on a sandbar slightly out to sea. It looked likely the whales would have to be euthanized to prevent them suffering a prolonged death, Smith said.

"They kept getting disorientated and stranding again," said Smith, who was among the rescuers. "They obviously couldn't find their way back past (the sandbar) to the sea."

Along came Moko, who approached the whales and led them 200 meters (yards) along the beach and through a channel out to the open sea.

"Moko just came flying through the water and pushed in between us and the whales," Juanita Symes, another rescuer, told The Associated Press. "She got them to head toward the hill, where the channel is. It was an amazing experience. The best day of my life."

As part of the cognitive psychology and linguistics university coursework, I came across references to Dr. John Lilly.

Read up on his work, and became enlightened with regards to dolphins. Awe-struck actually, if such a word exists.

Tibetan Buddhists (and Theosophy) have maintained that besides man (primates actually), there are two additional 'evolved' soulforms on Earth. Dolphins are one, have not found references to the other, except that this third one does not want it's state revealed.

In any case, dolphins really are wonderful animals.

Hopefully this won't be a thread hijack, but I have had the idea of late (due mostly to TD members posting about their business ventures) that it could be interesting for someone to open up an 'isolation tank retreat' in some tranquil location in LOS.

Lilly's pioneering work with isolation tanks documented the mind-expanding effects. Some have compared the effects to a therapeutic LSD trip without the danger of psychosis; others have described the consciousness states they reached as similar to what Buddhism (and Theosophy) posits.

I have not yet had the chance to be in an isolation tank, and the original post has now brought back all these thoughts/memories.

Anyone been in an isolation tank?

There is speculation that the third are 'non-corporeal'; there is a reference in some old buddhist/hindu text that the third are "without form" and generally uninvolved with human affairs. There is speculation that these are extra-terrestrials; or that they are remnants of our creators.

Another body of speculation is that the third are elephants; or a species that we have not yet encountered - living deep in the ocean, or in the remote Himalayas.

Tidbits of esoterica are awakening...

did you know that dolphins cannot be put under general anasthesia? Unlike land mammals, dolphin respiration is not autonomous. Even when sleeping, they are partly awake, just so they can control their breathing.

Kind of like a parent of a young one...always alert for a strange sound from the tyke.

Hero dog bitten defending little Ebony

ROARY the Staffordshire bull terrier turned lifesaver when he saw a deadly brown snake rear to strike three-year-old Ebony Davis. Roary jumped on the 1.5-metre snake, bit it and swung it clear of Ebony and her father in the backyard of their home.

But the family pet's bravery almost cost its life. As Roary held on, the snake bit him repeatedly on the flanks and one ear before breaking free and slithering under a shed.

Ebony's father, Tim Davis, 38, said the dog "did a lap of honour around the yard, with his tail on high, and then he went in the house and collapsed".

"As I wiped the venom off his body, his legs gave way and his head came down on the floor," Mr Davis said. "There was no sign of life in him."

'You are a hero,' young mum told

HEROINE: Chief Minister Paul Henderson has nominated Florence Birks for a bravery award. Picture: DANI GAWLIK

A YOUNG Territory mother who risked her own life to save two disabled women from a blazing Darwin home has been labelled a hero.

Florence Birks, 24, used all of her strength to carry a crippled woman twice her size to escape ceiling-high flames raging around them.

The mother-of-two then braved intoxicating smoke and a nearby oxygen-tank explosion to return to the house and rescue another wheelchair-bound woman sleeping inside.

Chief Minister Paul Henderson was so impressed by Mrs Birks' gallant rescue effort as told in the Northern Territory News yesterday that he has nominated her for a bravery award.

And it's not the first time she has saved lives.
In 1990, as a teenager, she managed to alert her family that a rocket was heading towards their home in war-ravaged Liberia just in time for them to escape and watch as their house blew up.

She probably set the house on fire and then felt a bit guilty, as for the rocket, hmmmm, they travel real fast like and low, doubt that was possible unless she arranged it, obviously the woman is some sort of nutter.
