    Five Kilos

This is how much weight I gained in thirty days in the US. I continued to work out at least an hour nearly every day and I generally ate only two meals a day with a little snacking in between. Unfortunately, at least one of those two meals was at a restaurant. Even more unfortunately, I have no self-control and restaurants seem to have abandoned portion control. The meals are huge and full of fat and calories. It really is astounding. It's easy to see why so many Americans are grossly overweight. A few meals out a week and weight gain is inevitable.

I suppose if I were on my own I could have done better, but constantly dining with family and friends who encourage and even insist that you overindulge resulted in the largest short term weight gain that I've ever experiences.

When I was running marathons I weight about 65-70 kilos. More recently I've scaled in at 80 or 81. Yesterday, after arriving home it was 86!

    A crushing experience.

The coming challenge? Get back to 80 kilos without giving up beer.

So much processed food in the U.S.

Restaurants have huge portions. Too much food.

Lot of sodium in restaurant food, too.

Many restaurant food have high caloric density.

Are they in general, overweight? (They probably are and have bigger stomachs.)

    You can do it.

    Keep us posted.

^^^No one in my family is really overweight, but no one is skinny, either. But, with me being there they always wanted to "go out". My sister also gained some weight while I was there and has vowed "no more restaurant meals".

It's really tough. You hate to be a spoil sport by refusing to go out so much or by ordering just a salad or appetizer. But, that's what I ended up doing. If only I'd started out that way!

Don't worry buad hai, I'll suggest you tochange your diet to a lot of vegetables accompanied by some grilled non fat meat (chicken, pork, beef or anything else including insects).

Here is a recipe who will make anybody adore vegetable, it's a southern french recipe and it's over delicious. Sorry the recipe is in french but illustrated with many pics so it's easy to understand.

Recette Ratatouille. (courgette, oignon, poivron, tomate, ail, aubergine, huile d'olive, bouquet garni)

And a pic that will make you hungry:

You'll be able to find all the ingredients in your local market in LOS... most of them, aubergines could not be easy to find but available from any supermarket or farang foodshop.

The Vietnamese say never eat rice when you drink beer.
And the Japanese also eat little rice when partying in the evening, mainly fat and proteins, no carbohydrates.
So if you keep drinking beer, do not eat rice, bread or french fries at the same time...

I gained about 3 or 4 kilos last time I visited the states. The only reason I didn't gain more is that my wife and I would often order a single meal and share it!

The sight of us each munching away at either end of a super-burrito seemed to amuse our fellow diners!

    It's the calories that count.

    Reduce your caloric intake.

You can eat 100% fats in your diet and have no Proteins and Carbs, and you'll still lose weight. (Just an example.)

P/C/F of 40/40/20 is a pretty good ratio if your exercising.

    Indeed.
The difference is just that in the absence of carbs, the fat or proteins have to be processed into carbs by your body in order to feed your brain and your muscles (in no particular order...).
    And this process consumes calories.

And eating protein with some slow acting complex carbohydrates causes the body to better absorb and metabolize protein.

It's important to keep taking in the fats. 15-20% of fats should be in everyone's diet. (Monosaturated.)
