90% of Facebook is patronizing juvenile nonsesnse, I couldn't care less if some friend of my brother I met once in 1996 has added the 'What vegetable are you?' application.

The basic idea is very good but all the shit Benbaa and I are referring to is how they make their money, though not sure how exactly.

There is a group boycotting it as it is being used as a tool for stalkers and invades peoples privacy... Also, if you switch off all those insipid applications nothing happens, you still open your Hotmail inbox to find most of it is shite from Facebook.

All you need to do is change your privacy and notification to the appropriate settings. Et voila, no problems.

IMHO, it's a free psych session and show-off site, all in one. I told my nieces to delete their dam photos and personal info. Oh, but friends can get our updates. Ya, and so can stalkers. E-mail, hunnybunnies.

Almost all of the complaints I've seen on here regarding Facebook seem to be based on either misunderstanding or misinformation. It's very strange.

    Yes... And?

If you don't care what application some friend of your brother that you met once in 1996 has added don't add him to your contacts. Problem solved.

If you are worried about stalkers and privacy adjust your security settings. Problem solved.

If you are concerned at having a mail box full of emails related to Facebook change the notification settings. Problem solved.

If you don't know how to use the technology fine, don't use it. But blaming the technology is all a bit 'villagers-with-pitchforks-and-flaming-torches-burning-the-neighbours-'Godless'-horseless-carriage-contraption-thing'.

Definitely not for me then. I don't want to be in contact with people I haven't thought of for years - that's why I don't think of them.

    quite.

i'd be worried about that too.

all those nasty stocky valleys girls that used to bully me in school for wearing eye liner would be wanting to be my friend.

    no thanks.

First - see how hard it is to remove your personal info from facetious book - or just fcuking google it then Wikinomics » Blog Archive » Four reasons you should remove yourself from Facebook Four reasons you should remove yourself from Facebook In no order of importance, the following is a growing list of concerns I have with Facebook. 1. Facebook employee perks According to recent reports, there have been significant privacy concerns at the Facebook HQ. It seems that Facebook employees get a great perk – spying on whomever they want. It seems that an employee can learn a lot about you, without you ever knowing it. Not only that, but they can see information on whose profile you’ve been looking at. Do you really want that information tracked? 2. Facebook Applications Every time you sign up to play Texas Hold’em or hit your friends with rotten pumpkins (if someone makes this app), you’re giving away all of your personal information to these application providers. How often do you when you play games on yahoo, or MSN first give away all of your information? There are even more applications that exist solely to extract your personal data, and to be used for whatever they want. 3. Targeted advertising Now, although not a surprise, the latest deal with Microsoft may make the internet a smaller place. Next time you’re searching on the internet and you find yourself being served advertisements for beer when you’re on a random florist website, it may be thanks to your Facebook cookie. When Facebook launches their new “SocialAds” platform on November 6th, it will unleash a network of sites with information not only on your browsing habits, but on all of your personal information. 4. Personal Privacy Remember the announcement of Facebook’s public listing search? Announced on September 5th, you will now be able to search on Google, or any other search engine and see the profile picture of one of the 50 million people on Facebook. Thankfully I’ve already opted out of this service, but for those of you who didn’t set your privacy controls, the display picture of you drinking with your buddies may be plastered all over the web for future employers to see. This is just a short list of the growing fears of misuse of personal information; there are numerous other reasons why I would consider removing myself from Facebook. I already know that deep in the Google vaults is a long list of search queries, browsing history and information on who I associate with. How long until all of my information gets linked together and everything I do on the World Wide Web ends up in one person/company’s hands. How concerned are you?

Ant you're being a twat again now aren't you, I didn't say I didn't want the guy as a contact - just that I don't need to be informed of every little application he adds - or probably doesn't add but they do it for him.

I have switched off all notification settings other than personal messages to me, and they have all been ignored. As I type I am being sent an email telling me that so and so has posted on my 'Funwall'.

Good - if a future employer can't handle the fact I like a beer with my mates socially then they can fuck off, I don't want to work for people like that - in fact I don't want to work for anyone except me, and now I don't work for anyone except me.

I know who my mates are and that's all that matters - if some nerd in Chicago gets off on seeing a photo of me drinking Tsing Tao beer from a friends shoe then I won't lose any sleep.
