    Beggers.

OK so this might be a bit controversial but when have you known me to be pedestrian with my threads? Lambast me if you want for posting this but please understand that I do so in an attempt to help these poor folks. If it only raises awareness then it will have been worthwhile. I have been in Bangkok for 2 weeks now and one thing that has literally smacked me in the face here is the street beggers. If you have a heart of steal and can just walk past these unfortunate folk then please dont post ridicule on this thread. Weeks ago in a truth about yourself thread I stated that I give money to buskers but not beggers. That has all changed folks. Today I visited Chatuchak Market and was literally stunned by the beggers there. I am sorry, but it was all I could do to decipher this persons gender, let alone anything else. I found myself trying not to look at the geezer as I put a note in the box.

It's the beggars who have the heart of 'steal' Captain!!!

Thes poor fuks are bused around to all the tourist spots by a local mafia and the bulk of your contribution is now being spent on pirated drugs!(or so Arnie tells me!)

    Fek 'em.
My dad was in a worse state than most of the cnuts I see on the street (thanks to Americas military action in Korea) and he could conduct himself with dignity!

To be honest I am staggered at your allegation Pooly but will bow to your knowledge as it is so obviously greater than mine. Sadly, it doesnt change a thing in my perception of their plight. Forgetting the money, if what you say is true, then I have inadvertantly added to another problem. I am sorry. However these unfortunate geezers ARE with these disabilities. If in fact they ae bussed around by the mafia then at least there is some kind of framework of support for them. Though I would like to know more. This chap makes his way by elevating his elbow and dragging the rest of his body. I doubt that he has made it home yet and I snapped that pic over 5 hours ago. Think about it.

Completely agree. It's common knowledge that they work for some kind of mafia and are con-artists. I think I read it in the LP or something, and I read the same thing in the "Dos and Don'ts of Thailand" book.

Maybe the best idea is to give them something to eat or drink rather than money???

wouldn't you better off doing something to improve their lot, if you feel so strongly about it. i don't see how posting threads on the TD is gonna help, anyone who has travelled around asia will have seen similar sights, so raising awareness is not an issue.

Cap I will show you this guy tomorrow down the bottom of the Nana BTS.
    That's his turf week nights.

    [url="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/SpectreIB/180206018.jpg"]
I often wonder how he gets around?
I always see him at chatuchuk. Then every week at Nana. quite often in the smallest but busiest soi in the bowels of Pratunam market.

Do you think he drives his own car?
Nah, got to be a bus or taxi, right?
    Thumbs a lift perhaps?

There's a 'good girl done wrong' Thai bargirl novel kicking around that has the story where the village drunk is kidnapped, has his limbs removed and stuck on pedestrian bridges to beg for the rest of his life!!

I've seen so many beggars on a daily basis that if they weren't blind we'd be at the noddin' stage of a relationship.

    CONNED, YOU BEEN CONNED, SUCKER

I don't mean that as a spiked comment at you but that is how anyone who donates s seen by them.
On a good day he prolly pokes away 2-3000 baht.
Did he have new shoes, a nifty phone and a Sony Walkman?
Nah..........but some fukker does, thanks to people's good hearts!!!!

    Send them to the temples!

Nah....Cap, if you want to donate and feel good about it, you go right ahead.

It's not my aim to rattle someone's efforts at buying their place in Heaven but I don't believe for one second that if i put a satang in their plastic cup that it would make the slightest bit of difference to their lives.

Fuk, working people here can be satisfied when they make 200baht and they have damn more to show for it than these foks, who get minmum 10X!

I'd rather hand over 1K to a young girl to help pay for her uni education (or a sick buffalo - DIAW!)

I'd say that dog is a freelancer!

    He's bought himself some shades!

The only beeggars I see with shades are those that can see but want to be percieved as blind!

Well here is a pic of an old Thai couple doing their act. Strangely, there were 4 very similar acts going on and it helped me to get lost in Chatuchak. I finally found a gate that lead to the outside world and scarpered in a taxi. It was an exhausting day I must say.

Captain, Bangkok is quite sterile in many respects when it comes to beggars. Where I live I have witnessed a young pretty innocent 8 year old transform into an underage prostitute before my eyes. Her father sold her into underage prostitution. Her shameless parents dropped her off on a backpacker tourist area and started her selling flowers when she was pre-pubescent. Now she is a 14 year old prostitute. No other road in life for her. Who gets the money? The Chinese mafia gets most, and her dead-beat parents the rest, and her a little. Maybe a pack of cigarretes, and a free drink.

    Beggars go to certain areas.

They are allowed to go to certain areas usually by the mafia, which makes an agreement to take most of the money you give them. Only a select few are allowed to beg in that area, usually. Outsiders will see violence enacted upon them.

And the kids with the begging bowls where I live. If you buy them food they get beat. They are supposed to refuse food and only take money and then give it to those above them. There are people watching them.

Yes, many that are begging need the help. They've had a road much less fortunate than us. I give to the severely disabled and the elderly, even if I know a beggar-pimp is nearby, or if it's a scam, which is sometimes is.

If you were begging on the street - no one would care - except your close loved ones and your friends. Much the same as these people.

    Peace.

I am sorry, but it was all I could do to decipher this persons gender, let alone anything else. I found myself trying not to look at the geezer as I put a note in the box.
Cap, you do have a heart. I commend you for that.

    Interesting (and sad) point..

As I have mentioned here before, I make buying a bag of ice-cream for the urchins in cambodia part of my visa-run. I have it 'sussed' now, and give a bag full to one of them the moment before I get back on the coach - before they have a chance to slice my ruck-sack, and pinch my wallet. I can then watch them from the safety of the my seat on the bus as they devour the ice-creams. All kids like ice-cream..

There are also a couple of regular old beggers at my station, and I'm not sure, but I think they may well be free-lancers, as opposed to being connected to the mafia. - I have seen one old guy (who I ALWAYS give 5/10baths to) actually buy food not long after I have given him money to. The old loa couple who play the flute also accept small gifts of food gratefully (usually left overs from a near by restaurant)..

The first couple of pics in this thread are of some pretty well known beggers though, and i would agree with pooly that these guys must take in thousands of baht on some days - the guy dragging himself on the ground for instance, drags himself up and down the same 10metre area in Nana 5 days a week - then has a gig at the weekend markets on top of that! = Big $ for the mafia..
