    Using common sense...

    To some TD posters:

The following is my own personal opinion and in no way relates to any of the other mods. Yes, hillbilly is a mod.

As many of you know the upper half of TD is fairly heavily moderated. In other words we try to stay on track and don’t want to read the bullshit.

Now, this is what aggravates me. A poster will ask a serious question concerning their lifestyle in Thailand on the upper half and then act like a complete ass on the bottom half of the TD forum. I say piss on them; you can’t have your cake and eat it too!

I (hillbilly) have been a founding member since June 2005. Much of my free time and energy discarding my family has been spent on this forum. Having said that, I am not alone by any stretch of the imagination. Many members have donated their time and expense to see TD grow. I would love to add their names, but the list is to long.

TD offers an insight, suggestions and guidance to SEA on the internet that has never been seen before.

    Let’s use some common sense.

TD mods would rather just relax and enjoy.

However, if you want to dance, then be prepared to pay the fiddler.

I never know if I'm in upper half or lower half as I never navigate by forums. Just the 'New Post' list.

^^ I have no problems with that, but there's some people whos goal is to stir the pot as much as they can, I'm pretty sure that the mods here know those people and what nics they use, so IMO they should be banned as soon as spotted.

Seems to be a big influx of experienced posters from other boards on here lately. Lots of trolls, and 3rd party disputes from other places using TD as their battle ground.

Good point. So maybe TD needs to refine the upper and lower half of TD.

    I think it's just fine.

nearly all serious questions are answered seriously.

this is by far the best of the Thai forums to get a reasonable answer when you want one.
in the mean time we can all piddle around in the lounge.

i think the balance is pretty good.

At the risk of sounding facecitous (which I'm not trying to), aren't you also trying to have your cake and eat it too?

If I'm understanding "upper half" correctly that's things like the gardening threads, construction and all that stuff? If I'm right in assuming that I also think that the 'lower half' contains some good stuff too (e.g. the movie review thread is always one of the first things I click on).

I know that's not exactly what you're referring to, but isn't the point that it's a more-or-less free forum? I guess what I'm trying to say is that if there's going to be a judgment call on what's 'valuable' input and contributions and what's not who makes that call? Isn't that entirely subjective? I mean obviously a gardening post is going to be of immeasurably more value to someone interested in gardening than it will someone interested in politics.

So bascially (aside from the obvious) what's wrong with asking a serious question in the top-half and then being an arse in the lower-half because that's still adding value isn't it?

Anyways just my thoughts. I'm presuming in the absence of evidence to the contrary I'm one of the "some TD posters" addressed in the OP.

I think the different colour scheme for the teaching and newbies forum seems to have worked well. Maybe the boss could consider a different shade of blue for the top half .

i think the danger is in trying to impose your will on a very eclectic mix of people.

thai visa have tried and failed.

common sense tells me that making people have it isn't possible.

    I don't understand the problem.
What is wrong with being serious in the top half and having a laugh and a bit of banter in the lower half. Why "piss on them" ?

hillbilly has a slightly high browed taste in posts and threads here.
that's fine, but common sense surely dictates that the vast majority don't.

think this place would get many posts a day if you removed the bottom half?

what would people do while they are waiting for someone to take their camera on holiday or buy a new bathroom sink?

I'm sorry, hillbilly, but I never look at the construction or gardening threads. Very rarely at the visa, teaching or travel threads. I like the food forum & the news forum in the upper half. The bottom half is the part of TD I prefer. I can understand if mods feel they are being unfairly picked on, but the banter in the lower half is why I come to TD. I hope I'm not one of those you are talking about, as I don't try to be offensive. However, I'll fully admit, I come here to have fun.

im still trying to get my mind around upper and lower half and the notion that posters even know what room they are in. i try to know what the op was and stay generally on point. dont play rough with newbies and support your shit with facts in issues. the rest is just a play ground. i dread the notion of over moderation and urge an if it aint broke dont fuck with it attitude.

One of the things that has attracted me to TeakDoor is the diverse range of topics and postings. While I've got the be the first to admit I've not spread myself around in the same spirit that TD has shown me, it doesn't mean that I haven't read and appreciated most of the forums posted here.

To me, it just stems down to what is considered polite in what places...just like a pub/restuarant. Things you'd talk about with the guys at the bar may not be the most tactiful subject at the dinner table.

Its up to us as members to remind each other what decorum to use throughout our "house". If posters seem to have a problem with that, thats when the mods step in.

    But thats just my take....

The appeal of TD for me is the variety of topics and the general atmosphere of making it all a fun experience as well as an informative one. Forums and information sources abound on travel, house building and visa stuff but none have the one stop shopping TD has. I think the formula is about right and if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I too don't look at specific forums but simply look at New Posts or My Replies everyday. Seeing a post of interest no matter the forum and I will look at it. I believe the MKP section is a good way to put silly posters in their place.

Yes, top marks to Hillbilly to let members comment on moderation. He would have been suspended already at TV for doing such a thing and had is moderator status stripped.

I, for one, would like to hear what members think, and also about Issues moderation. I think we try to let things go in Issues as much as possible, and only step in to moderate if things get whacky, or the threads get hi-jacked with personal bickering and insults.
