    Overcrowded BTS

    Has anyone else noticed this?

Travelling on the BTS is now a pretty unpleasant experience with trains just as packed as the London underground, and people are often left standing on the platform to await the next train.

At first I thought it must be due to the tourist season, but the situation has become worse since Christmas, not better. Then I figured maybe some car owners were travelling by BTS now that petrol has hit TB 30 per litre.

Then I found myself waiting for 15 minutes for a train and I realised, the intervals have been extended. There seem to be fewer trains.

I know there is a new line opening soon out in Thonburi but surely new trains have been purchased to cover for this I mean the BTS management can't be taking trains away from the current lines ready for the new one, can they? Please, nobody can be that stupid.

Anyone else got ideas on this?

In theory, there are more trains running as this is more efficient than putting on more coaches (don't ask me why), but I guess it's not running so well. The MRT is busy too, but it seems to be running quite well at the moment.

The platforms are more than double the length of the trains - there's plenty of spare coaches at Mo Chit, there's no excuse to treat people as sardines.

Even though we are led to believe it is now turning an operating profit, the fact that the BTS still owes some ridiculous figure in the tens of billions from construction and is struggling to pay the interest alone seems to be conveniently kept quiet.

Do they still have the TVs on in the trains? If so, I'm surprised anyone uses them.

I've always found the live viewing to be the best on the BTS. Office girls, Uni girls....etc... Always wear sun glasses so I can perv without being too obvious.

Yes, maybe that is why the trains are packed solid with Thais now.

I hadn't considered that one William.

Couldn't they borrow some coaches from the MTR?

Nope, they are identical but have speckly blue seats instead of yellow.

I don't believe the trains and rollong stock are interchangeable and anyway the MRT trains don't have televisions.

With the BTS being such a miserable experience much of the time now I can envisage it becoming far worse when the new line opens and thousands more passengers emerge onto the network. Maybe it's time to put up the fares.

It has been open six years or more and they are so in debt that they have not even paid off the interest?

    That is bad.

    No.

The MTR coaches are 3 inches higher than the BTS due to the MTR being built with a different train supplier in mind. This was changed at the 11th hour, so the carriages lad to be raised by the said 3 inches to be at the right height for the platforms.

In Thailand it is normal. If it were making a profit someone would have taken the money anyway. Profits aren't used to repay loans here.

Actually it’s fairly normal the world over for public transport projects such as this to be in debt for many many years, look at the channel tunnel for the worst example.

Buses are generally seen as the most cost effective option because the investment cost is that much lower, but in a city with the traffic situation of Bangkok more buses wouldn't have been very helpful.

Sky trains and subways cost a lot to build and just like madjbs says, are often riddled with debt for long periods of time after construction.
