As for the elderly, when I'm old I will NOT be a burden to my son and he will not be required to take care of me. There will be no emotional blackmail. Life goes forward, not backward.
I think there is some difference between the view we have, coming from the West, of begging and the way Thais view it.
We associate begging with homelessness and hunger. In Thailand if you are poor and have been saddled with some distant relative then dumping them on the pavement in the early hours and collecting them at night can be merely a way of making that relative pay their way. A good meal and a shower and they are up and running for another day's begging.
The children are rented out to the begging mafia. The women who are with them are not usually related to them.
I once saw an old woman, in a macabre bit of humour, playfully pretend to throw her two rented begging children into traffic on Sukhumvit. She cackled after doing it with each kid in turn; they looked terrified.
