Thread: Thai Pets. It's a dog's life

The way Thais treat animals astonishes me. We have all seen the absurd little doggies some women keep but generally for Thai pets it seems to be a dog's life.

This was brought to mind last night when I returned home to find there was just one fish in the tank where previously there were two. Apparently one fish killed the other. I know this because the grinning manager had recorded the gruesome act on his camera phone.

This isn't the first time where an animal's death has been greeted with indifference. A previous lady-friend was gradually working her way through the animal kingdom. If only she had fed the fish, hamster and two cats she owned in that year maybe they would have stood some chance.

It's simple. If the cat dies you buy another one.

Anyone else seen this?

I think the soi dogs have better lives than any of the 'pet' dogs I've seen.

I agree with that. Some may have disease, no hair, and often injuries but they aren't surrogate children with daily shampoo baths and silly clothes.

Soi dogs are happy as they are, as long as they aren't ill.

It's only when we impose our own values on them that they fall short of the mark.

If you had seen my GF's Mum, unable to sleep, worried sick about 'bob' the chicken because she was stuck in someone elses garden, that might change your mind.

I saw a dog run over once & there were a few Thai girls who helped it onto a Baht bus & went wherever they did with it, so I can't say all Thai people have no love for animals, but if they cared about their welfare as a rule, we wouldn't see so many in the situation that they are in.

^ It's culture, lack of education as far as animal welfare is concerned, lack of forethought & lack of money rather than outright cruelty in most cases, I think. That's why most animal orgs in Thailand push education as one of their priorities.

I was thinking about getting one of these to protect my property, a fearsome brute if ever I saw one.

Those Farang women would scare most of us, Property.

Buy a pack of toast and put next to the tank. If the food is already provided they will queue up to feed the fish and it will be happier.

(Until somebody comes up with the idea of adding chewing gum to the bread.)

I was in Emporium yesterday so I bought some fish food for my new piscean friend. Dropped a sprinkiling into the tank last night and left the remainder in reception as a hint.

Well I guess the receptionist must have got bored overnight because all of the food went in the tank last night. Fishy had a feast. I'm amazed he has lived through it. I blame myself, I should have anticipated that one.

A few are very nice. But most of them SHIT!

Poison would put paid to one on these in a few minutes. Dogs, in Thailand, are not a threat to burglars.
