I was struck by the dazzling golden and tangerine hues of Simon's impulse buy
I hope you got a pair of sunglasses with that bewt, Simon!
So I thought I would post up my motley collection. I have been buying fakes for fun on holiday for years so I have amassed an eclectic collection.
The cheaper brands like Citizen, Rotary and JAG are genuine, but the Omegas and Rolexes are all as dodgy as a $3 bill, running cheaper Miyota 8215 movements or similar
I did eventually buy a genuine Tag Heuer Carrera. This move was unusual in that it was driven by my beloved replica breaking down and I could not get it replaced or repaired easily in Straya-land (and then broke it worse trying to fix it myself!) so I begin to wonder about maybe having one properly decent genuine watch.
It feels different wearing a real watch. The quality feel of the bracelet is what I noticed first, silky silent link slink instead of jangly loose. Also the hi-beat 28800kbph 4 hz 8 ticks per second smooth sweep compared with the 3hz 6 ticks per second 21600kbph of the Miyotas. But I still enjoy wearing my collection of fakey fakes.
There is something magically mesmerizing about mechanical watch movements so I usually prefer watches with exhibition case-backs. I am not huge fan of open-heart balance-wheels but they are a fun diversion occasionally.
This was my first ever fake purchased in 2003 from a market in Dubai on a stopover on the way back from a business trip to Islamabad. Now sorely in need of a clean-up.
It stopped working in 2008 and I got it serviced in Phnom Penh for $5 and it has been working flawlessly ever since.
The thing I like about fake chronographs is that the main second hand moves. On genuine chronographs the second hand points to midnight unless you are timing something, since it is a stopwatch, and the real seconds are on a sub-dial. Watching a sweeping main second hand is part of the pleasure of wearing a watch for me, so a genuine chronograph is not something I would ever likely want to wear.
The Casio of my teenage years is the online impulse buy with which I started the Impulse Buy thread.
What timepiece are you sporting on your wrist and is their any story behind it?
