    TeakDOOR Horology Hounds

I was struck by the dazzling golden and tangerine hues of Simon's impulse buy

I hope you got a pair of sunglasses with that bewt, Simon!

So I thought I would post up my motley collection. I have been buying fakes for fun on holiday for years so I have amassed an eclectic collection.

    TeakDOOR Horology Hounds-20250122_043150-jpg

The cheaper brands like Citizen, Rotary and JAG are genuine, but the Omegas and Rolexes are all as dodgy as a $3 bill, running cheaper Miyota 8215 movements or similar

I did eventually buy a genuine Tag Heuer Carrera. This move was unusual in that it was driven by my beloved replica breaking down and I could not get it replaced or repaired easily in Straya-land (and then broke it worse trying to fix it myself!) so I begin to wonder about maybe having one properly decent genuine watch.

    TeakDOOR Horology Hounds-20250122_043850-jpg

It feels different wearing a real watch. The quality feel of the bracelet is what I noticed first, silky silent link slink instead of jangly loose. Also the hi-beat 28800kbph 4 hz 8 ticks per second smooth sweep compared with the 3hz 6 ticks per second 21600kbph of the Miyotas. But I still enjoy wearing my collection of fakey fakes.

There is something magically mesmerizing about mechanical watch movements so I usually prefer watches with exhibition case-backs. I am not huge fan of open-heart balance-wheels but they are a fun diversion occasionally.

This was my first ever fake purchased in 2003 from a market in Dubai on a stopover on the way back from a business trip to Islamabad. Now sorely in need of a clean-up.

    TeakDOOR Horology Hounds-20250122_044502-jpg

It stopped working in 2008 and I got it serviced in Phnom Penh for $5 and it has been working flawlessly ever since.

The thing I like about fake chronographs is that the main second hand moves. On genuine chronographs the second hand points to midnight unless you are timing something, since it is a stopwatch, and the real seconds are on a sub-dial. Watching a sweeping main second hand is part of the pleasure of wearing a watch for me, so a genuine chronograph is not something I would ever likely want to wear.

The Casio of my teenage years is the online impulse buy with which I started the Impulse Buy thread.

What timepiece are you sporting on your wrist and is their any story behind it?

    Big news, heritage horology hounds...

The classic Casio that opened the Impulse Buy thread has been updated for the Bluetooth age...

You can now get a watch that is a subtly updated super-retro looking 80's style Casio, but it connects to your phone and has an accelerometer for measuring steps

So glad they are keeping this awesome 80's vibe alive

I checked my original that I bought 10 years ago and it has gained 120 seconds in 10 years or 1 second per month.

Of course the new version syncs with your phone so it save you re-setting the watch once every 10 years!

Mine still on its original battery with no fade showing so far.

I thought I might try to render a more respectable real-to-replica ratio to my watch collection and I am a sucker for a blue face dress watch...

    TeakDOOR Horology Hounds-20250122_075402-jpg

Lovely peely plastic to peel off on the bracelet and case...

    TeakDOOR Horology Hounds-20250123_045500-jpg

    Last bit...

    TeakDOOR Horology Hounds-20250123_045805-jpg

I am not usually a fan of either open heart or small seconds but after initially thinking it was too big at 42mm this has grown on me and I am wearing it every day this week

    TeakDOOR Horology Hounds-20250123_045832-jpg

Nice display back so you can see the (Japanese Miyota) mechanical movement's bits and bobs whirring and clicking (no Swiss movements at this humble price point).

    TeakDOOR Horology Hounds-20250123_050109-jpg

Watch Youtuber Nico Leonard has demoted Bulova to the 'Shite' category for 2024 so I now own my very first 'Shite' watch.

Don't listen to horological haters. Watches are personal subjective things. If you are on the same wavelength as the watch you are wearing then it is the right watch for you.

I cant find the link to that, can you post the model number of that watch. Its a beauty.

I have a small collection, a 60 year old Omega, a couple of 35 year old Oris Big Crowns, a 40 year old Seiko quartz that never so much as loses a second, and a Smiths military. They all get worn but I do like Casio retros.

    Thanks.

My collection of two, which I don't envisage ever adding to.

The Air-King-Date for Isaan, the DateJust for proper places.

The Air-King-Date keeps awful time, but good enough for this place.

That was just to save taking two pictures.

The original bracelet for the Air-King-Date wore out and was so expensive to replace it just didn't seem worth it.

I bought both second hand (), the Air-King-Date dates from the early 80s and the DateJust from the mid 70s. I've had the Air-King-Date since 1993 and hope the daughter takes it on in due course. It's small enough to be worn by a Western-sized woman.

The Rollie with the fabric strap and the new Blue Face are beauties, to be shure to be shure.

Unfortunately I'm pure function over form.

Time. Steps. Kcals. Sleep analysis if one so wishes. Post-Coital Heartrate measuring fun. Current temp. And around 1 million different faces to choose from. Classy it ain't.

Are both those Rollies dated to the 9th of something or other?

^ I just checked Google Photos and apparently I took the photo on Monday 9th September 2024, a few days after I returned back from Norway and I guess when I swapped watches.

The DateJust will have stopped a couple of days after that.

Mucho Rolex Respect Mendo. I dream of one day owning the king of watches but I think at my level of hobbyism it may remain a pipe dream.

This is a high quality Chinese engineered demagnetiser retailing for about $15

With a watch of such ancient heritage it could well have been in the presence of a magnetic field at some point in its life.

The hairspring that controls the resonant frequency of the balance wheel is highly sensitive to magnetism. If the spring material gets magnetised it can cause the watch to lose or gain significantly. Never hurts to have one around if you have custodianship of such a special pair of watches. Easy to use. Just plug it in. Place the watch on the demagnetiser. It generates a highly active and dynamically varying magnetic field. Then slowly draw the watch away from the device and out of its field of magnetism and any latent magnetism should have been neutralised*

(*if this Chinese technological masterpiece totally fuks the vintage Rolex up then demand a refund of the full $15 and not a penny less!)

@Looper, my photo is of the worst quality, but indeed, the watch's (lurid?) colours is what attracted me to buy it.

In fact, I haven't worn a watch for at least 40 years! I previously used vintage pocket watches, full Hunters etc. I didn't like a watch on my wrist and simply used to refer to my mobile phone clock.

However, I usually carry my mobile phone in a small money belt around my waist, so by the time I struggle to unzip the pocket, take out my phone, activate the screen and read the digital time, I could have glanced at my wrist-watch and spent the remaining minute wolf-whistling at the various street-walkers on Pattaya Beach Road....(Note that I am temporarily in Pattaya, but back to Myanmar very soon).

^ I was going to say that there is probably an app where you simply ask your phone the time, and it will tell you. So I just looked online, and indeed there is a talking clock app. But you shake it, not ask it. So even with the screen turned off, you just shake your phone, or use different preferences, and it will tell you the time. By gum, technology nowadays.

Bought this little beauty today at Central Rama 2. B.2914 after discounts and vouchers.

Not too oversized, very light weight, with a lovely orange glow dial that reminds me of the lights on radio dials when I were a nipper. Very complicated to set up all the functions and link to a casio app on my phone though. Its quite low key in appearance and has got all the features I need without the aggressive military Rambo look of the Casio G shock range.

And thanks Looper for the thread.

Nice collection Loops and a very nice pair of watches Mendy.

Bought this Tag F1 back in 2006, never really wear it, I just really liked it.

The new peachy back light looks really special compared to the old retro 80s winky side light on my A168W

Go on, spill a couple of beanz or clues for the Casio commoners Icey, even if you don't want to post photos...

I did like the super-bling Gold SkyDweller that junior was rocking on Married at First Sight a few years back (new season started last week) although if I were ever able to afford a precious metal Rolex I think I would go for the gold DayDate40 with half Roman numerals on champagne dial.

It is curious that the platinum Rolex still commands a significant premium over gold (even after the 2025 Rolex price updates) despite Gold having increased in price 3 fold in the past couple of years and now costing almost 3 times more than platinum per gram.

Apparently platinum has a more stable price since it is dictated more by platinum's wider industrial uses such as catalytic converters, whereas the price of gold is more emotionally and aspirationally driven.
