    Wink Porridge

    As the cold mornings refreshingly arrive time to get me oats.
    An American explained that steel cut are superior!

    I shall leave technique and pot stirring to begbie Dirk Diggler and fellow Caledonian excess, Suffice to say you twiddle yer spurtle, a mini cricket bat for the jock strapped and tartanly handicapped.

    As a schoolboy it was standard fare , quick cheap filling with a blob if jam of lucky. A pal in Wales still eats it daily regardless of weather, he is the closest man I have ever met to a barrel.

    Here's a recipe I'll toss in and over to you if you have comments chuck 'em around.


    • Put 50g porridge oats in a saucepan, pour in 350ml milk or water and sprinkle in a pinch of salt. Bring to the boil and simmer for 4-5 minutes, stirring from time to time and watching carefully that it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.
    • step 2

      Or you can try this in a microwave. Mix the porridge oats, milk or water and a pinch of salt in a large microwaveproof bowl, then microwave on High for 5 minutes, stirring halfway through. Leave to stand for 2 minutes before eating.
    • step 3

      To serve, pour into bowls, spoon Greek yogurt, thinned with a little milk, or jam, I particularly like French Bon Maman Black Cherry on top or for the camomile tea set drizzle with honey.Feed to dog.

      Yum Yum, soak pot immediatly to ease cleansing, nobody wants a sticky bottom.

    Instant oats. Just add hot water. Plus salt and a dab of honey. I have it every morning.

    I grew up having pollit everyday in winter. But me Mam and Dad had 9 kids and had to make ends meet. Now I’m comfortable I don’t need to eat oats. I’d rather toast, omelette, English breakfast, snags, rice, noodles or leftover pizza for breakfast. But not oats.

    Glad to hear you are getting your oats!

    What brands are available in LOS, only places in cycling distance here are Lotus, asmall independent supermarket or 7-11 my supply donated by friend will expire soon.
    I'll be venturing to nearest City of C Rai for Xams goodies/Absinthe where there is Tops, Big C , Makro etc

    Growing up in UK, oats were a common winter breakfast, which to be honest I loved. It more of a health thing now, as they really are pretty good for you.

    Winter has just finished but will enjoy porridge usually every other day 2 minutes in the micro
    A splash of honey..some yoghurt a banana or mango love it
    Great start to the day
    Introduced Mrs bld to it as well and she's well chuffed.

    i am a big fan of this for breakfast.

    porridge to full fat milk, 1:3, half a teaspoon of salt and leave it in the pan to soak for 30 minutes.

    then on with the gas, keep it low, and stir continually until the porridge has absorbed all the liquid and reached the required consistency according to your taste. some prefer it really think, some prefer it more soupy.

    add a tablespoon of pure honey, and sprinkle on a little ground cinnamon, stir well and there you go.

    sometimes i add a sliced banana, or a handfull of sultanas, or a few prunes. i also like to eat hot porridge spread on a thick slice or two of buttered wholemeal toast.

    Dave, you can get Quaker's oat porridge at Makro, and I think Tesco as well. The blue tins contain 2 minute porridge but there are red tins of porridge as well which I think microwaves even faster.

    I make the porridge with 50/50 water and milk, once finished I pour a little bit more milk on top, throw on a sliced banana and a handful of blueberries and then add a spoonful of honey. I prefer Golden Syrup but while we had run out I went over to honey, which ain't so good imho. I recently discovered that Korat Chef stocks Golden Syrup, so once I've finished up the opened honey I will go back to it.

    I was thinking the same DW. Maybe some of the esteemed TD posters don't have good teeth anymore so they can't chew.

    Being I was and still am not a breakfast eater, I do remember a few times as a kid my Mom making Cream of Wheat. She would toss on a dab of real butter and a spoonful of brown sugar.

    I was going to go for the red 'instant' packet, but now see that Sir Mendo has the blue 'ready to eat' version, which I believe may need cooking, as opposed to just adding boiling water/milk, which is all the red 'instant' packet require?

    Why is life so complicated. -_-

    ^ What do you do, pour in hot or cold water/milk? before microwaving for 2 minutes.

    willy, with age comes wisdom. your diet consists mainly of flyblown lumps of roasted bushmeat washed down with alcohol, and you should know that oats is an extremely healthy food with a very low glycemic index and a high proportion of soluble fibre. your biome will thank you.

    Because before the age of crap convenient food, I enjoyed food that was healthy for you. As life has gone on I still eat that type of food. Yes its more work, Yes its more expensive but FFS I am not getting up to eat Oats because they tell you its good for you. So is wheat toast, lean meat. Its all about moderation. But I get it, you hail from a country that chows down high fructose molasses filled baked beans as the "Perfect Bfast". White trailer trash garbage food that is.

    BTW Tax, do you eat your porridge with a straw?

    Overnight oats are the way to go, using old fashioned rolled oats.

    Soak overnight in room temperature water then all you have to do in the morning is add salt and heat them up.

    Stir with yer spurtle.

    Nae nonsense.

    I'll add that I like to mix some protein powder through mine, it's caramac flavour.

    If not, only salt.

    This thread reminded that I had some left over from my winter porridge supper season. I thought I would try a protein padding trick this evening by adding a scoop of whey protein.

    Whey protein does not blend as easily as pea protein but flavour-wise it is the right choice for porridge I think.

    McGarrett oats are available in Lotus's, Big C and Tops. Cheap too. 38 baht for 500g if i recall correctly. I buy the instant oats but quick oats and rolled oats may also be available. The only difference seems to be the size the oats are cut. Instant are cut smallest so they cook quickest (seconds), the Quick oats are next, then the rolled oats are largest.
