Not to derail this wonderful thread there are as some indictae risks to DNA sharing

BBC only today describe a bankrupt Russian controlled data base

Your data has value and can be sold spied on not just you of course

Of course succesful family reunions and genealogy are the upsides.

However we should be paying them not us paying to share our valubale ancestral heritage

In an era when euthanasia , abortion are hot topics it is not hard to see how the DNA could be misused for profiling "undesireables" thank god Mao,Mengele and Pol Pot didn't have such tools!

Caveat Emptor, I only know my lot for about 4000 to a suugested v small haplographic group in the Pyrenees with bits of Bohemian Italian Saxon Scots Irish and French according to my aunt who spent a lot of time and money on such research, the main link being the Black Irish Basque male lineage arriving in 1580s in Connemara with the Ragusa flotilla out of Dubrovnik.

However older parish and church records in UK and Ireland use patronymics so all the brides family names are hidden unless you have marriage and birth certs, many of these were destroyed in 1919 accident.

One interesting item I found recently I lived as a student very close to one of my grandfathers birth house, and walked past that very house for years without ever knowing.

Anyway congrats to Lostandfound and a very generous attitude to his mum and sharing here.

Seeing Mendy put up his daughters DNA made me think. About 2 years ago my daughter K had it done. Since she is a twin her sister would be the same. Found it and was surprised at the lack of Thai genes.

After ordering the packs and sticking in me info, Edmond Cheddar III, for the stalky among us, seems my uncle did it a few years ago, and have been put into the family tree that due to him and his info goes back 5 generations. Nothing really of interest or any surprises. Italian counts, lords, and a smidgen of *shudder* British Isle dukes, viscounts and barons. Thankfully no sign of inbreeding. Though I can count half a dozen uncles on one hand that share names.

If I was you I wouldn't go there after you told me about your heritage in that PM. I can see why you want it kept quiet.

    Baaaaa...

Anyway, this thread has motivated me to try and track down where the daughter's African DNA has come from, so today I ordered two DNA kits (free postage if you buy the second). This has the added bonus of sorting out a Christmas present... two birds and all that.

So not only am I going to test myself, I'm also going to do my wife for Christmas this year!

^^^ I also got it but I wouldn't joke about it because I had a schoolmate who had 6 fingers (polydactyly). She had a little thumb beneath her real thumb. She was sometimes bullied for it and I wouldn't wish it on anybody.

@AO - I'm also surprised that your daughter didn't have any Thai DNA. But then you've mentioned that your wife is Chinese-Thai? Chinese who migrated to other countries usually marry within themselves. It was only within the 2nd half of the 20th century (generally) that they marry people in their adopted lands (like Thai, Malay, Indo, Filipino, etc). In PH, the Filipino-Chinese esp the rich ones, they tend to marry each other. So maybe your wife's ancestors married only other Chinese-Thais.

Btw which DNA company did your daughter use? I like that the Chinese part of her result gave more details.

Mendy used My Heritage. Beware though - if you put your DNA (or those of your kids) in a database, if you had a "love child/ children" they can turn up as a match in future & they may contact you/ your kids.

Katie, as far as the wife knows her mom was full Chinese, while she had thought her dad was 1/2 Thai 1/2 Chinese it seems some of the Thai was mixed. I am not sure what company is was and will enquire. She says she is going deeper into it on the next check. The 9.6% of mixed Thai, Malay, and Indo must be mostly Thai. She also knows her family has Mon in it so that could be the Burmese component.

Thanks, that's interesting. I know of someone who looks pure Chinese but found significant amount of Northern Indian/ Pakistani DNA and Russian/ Siberian DNA in his results. Upon investigating his family history, it turned out that one branch of his family lived in the China-India border regions while another branch lived in the China-Russia border areas. The company used was 23mofang (China based).

Btw, was the one who took the test the daughter who looks like you or the one who resembles your wife? Since they're not identical, they would have slightly different DNA profiles. It would be interesting if they both took the test & see if the one who resembles you has more % of Euro DNA (and if the other one has more % of Asian DNA).
