    ^ Actually, I don't want to be pedantic but September 1752 only had 19 days in the UK when we changed from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, so your four year-old kid wasn't strictly correct...

    In Great Britain, the new calendar was adopted in September 1752. In order to deal with the discrepancy of days, which by now had grown to eleven, it was ordered that 2nd September 1752 would be immediately followed by 14th September 1752. This explains why our financial year begins on 6th April.
