    Daily Fish

I thought it was about time we had a Daily Fish thread.

Partly because I'm bored and partly because I have an inexhaustible source or material.

    All fish welcome!

I'll kick it off with a ling that had just caught a small whiting.

Fish love to swim ahead of the ROV and I guess they use the lighting to see prey. The small fish preying on the tiny fish often fall victim to the bigger fish following the small fish, as in this case.

Ling are a member of the cod family and are supposed to taste delicious, although I don't believe that I have ever tried one. They are called 'lange' in Norwegian, I guess because they are long.

That resolution is greater than I expected on an ROV. But then again, I’m not sure what I expected.

    AI net dogging says

"Enough red herrings all reddy you're really floundering now, kippers like ewe are angling for a mangling.

Eye don't mean to bait you or carp on but I think the briney beckons if you knead reel in a few more squid ,back on yer perch chubby, let yer gills workout before any more deep "trawling" .

The live view from the ROV is near perfect quality, but it of course gets degraded when recorded to digital video. The digital video is recorded at 50 frames per second which sounds a lot, but we need that to prevent motion blur during high speed visual surveys, where the ROV may fly at around 1.3 m/s. Digital video resolution is in fact the limiting factor for the speed of visual surveys and other technology is currently being investigated to speed things up.

That took me back to an old passport run...

Nice fish, and great photo quality. We don't seem to get such colourful fish in the North Sea.

Anyway, a monk fish of around 2 ft length. These well-camouflaged fish reminds me a bit of Keir Starmer... a huge head stuck on a little body, minus the fancy designer specs of course.

I really don't want this to end up being a fish pun thread.

That would give me a real haddock!

It's always depressing to see the seabed of the North Sea this time of year, every Autumn (not Fall) there is evidence of mackerel dumping.

But of course, nothing goes to waste...

These ain't like the anemones in the rock pools of Lyme Regis when I were a kid... these monsters can take a whole mackerel.

And if you're wondering just how big these anemones are, a glove for scale... that a disgusted stewardess no doubt threw overboard after cleaning yet another hairy-arsed offshore contractor's toilet.

A family of molluscs enjoying another mackerel...

    And a lucky crab!

That pipeline is between 100m and 110m water depth, or thereabouts.

    ^ Exactly.

    Good Cod!

And another... although this one looks a bit different. I think that there must be many cod sub-species.

Battered, with chips and peas, they'd look much the same.

Shell fish today, if that's not too self-centred.

I have frequently noticed that crabs and anemones live together, with anemones often seeming to congregate around a crab's nest.

Often, symbiotic relationships in nature such as this are mutualistic, with both species gaining something. I can see that the filter feeding anemones gain food from the detritus the crab leaves around after a meal, but what does the crab get out of this?

A classic mutualistic relationship often quoted is between the clown fish (Nemo) and anemones. The anemones provide protection from predators and left over food for the clown fish, and the clown fish clears the anemones of parasites.

But that doesn't seem relevant here.

Are you suggesting that the anemone is shellfish and the crab is not?

Perhaps it’s more of a commensalism symbiotic relationship? The ‘host’ neither gains or loses by the closeness of the anemones.
