^In regards to that comment from happy, I'd say that the first contract is only a year, I guess that is how they hook you. After that they offer 2 and 3 yr contracts with a two month bonus (2 month pay) if you sign for another two years.
Malaysia is a great place, especially out of the Muslim strongholds. Big Chinese population, reasonable Indian population,. Food is generally insanely good ( personally WAY better than Thai food, YMMV).
I would maybe cast an eye on it he management of the school ( foreign, Malay, Chinese, Indian). Which will flavour the work environment.
The great bonus is Malay is supposed to be one of the easiest languages to learn ( something to do with the number of tenses maybe?), but within 6 months you will have a smattering, enough to make life easier. Mind you, Malaysia was part of the British empire, so standard of English most places is pretty good ( way better than Thailand).
I found that because of the standard of English and because not all Malaysians speak Malay, most expats do not learn any Malay or Chinese or Tamil (or really need to).
I definitely have some concerns, especially with the heat.. I'm not used to living in a very hot place year round with monsoon season. I guess the next step would be an interview with the actual principal and take it from there.
As I sad pm me if you want info. I likely know him or her and I most certainly know the school, the area, the cost of living, transport and the tax regime. Not all schools pay EPF so that’s yet another thing to check.
BTW the recruiter has not given you 100% correct information because although you do need 182 days to gain residency it’s not true that you cannot leave the country. You may leave for up to two weeks during the period with certain T&Cs attached.
But again, all up to you. A genuine offer to assist, if you are really considering moving.
That is good to know about it being one of the easiest languages to learn. I already know how to say thank you in Malay just by watching some of my favorite vloggers roam around the city.
I also didn't know until not that long ago that many Malaysians speak English or that it was part of the British empire at one point.
By working at an international school there will be quite a few students where English isn't their first language and they may need assistance to improve their skills.
Thanks for the offer to assist. I'll pm you once I know a bit more and an interview is set up with the principal. I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions. Right now, I'm just looking into everything. I don't think I mentioned anywhere about the recruiter telling me I can't leave the country in the 182 days on this thread. He did tell me that if I do leave for any number of days, that will be tacked on when I come back in the country. So it would be better as most teachers do to wait and stay in the country to get my residency quicker within the year. I did not know about the T&C's though. I will reach out soon by pm, I'm sure you know a lot more than I do about Malaysia and the schools in that area.
^Okay, maybe it is how I worded it, sorry, but the recruiter didn't tell me I can't leave the country in that time frame, just that it would take longer to obtain the residency.
^why get so mad?
I have an interview later this week!! Wish me luck
Thanks again for all the great comments and supportive information!
Good luck!
You'll breeze it.
One should listen twice as much as one speaks
^ Thanks bonecollector, I may have a big decision on my hands.
^^Thanks Joe. I think I'm going to take a break from here for awhile. I need to prepare for the interview.
Good for you.
I sent Willy a pm a few days or so ago.. Were you serious about assistance?
Maybe this time she actually does have someone on her much trumpeted ignore list.

^^No, I don't and I'm shocked you are playing games after offering in front of people to send you a pm.
No problems if you don't want to reply, I've lived overseas for 9 years total, so i'll figure it out I guess.
Malaysia, whether it is peninsular, Penang or otherwise, is far superior to Thailand in terms of its people with whom, unlike Thai, one can construct meaningful, enjoyable relationships, whether they are casual, chance encounters or more socially sustaining, communicated in good English engaging on any subject and where one is treated as an equal, not some fucking alien whose only purpose is to provide a revenue stream which is the Thai way. The food is the best in SE Asia and richly varied.
The lingua franca is English which is readily understood everywhere and spoken by locals in a form that is usually syntactically correct. The only problem is that their women tend to be conservatively dressed in a muslim way and develop big arses. Chink women are a much better bet in terms of pick ups.
Because of the British heritage they have grasped the concept of pedestrian safety within urban environments far better than the Thai.
Their MacDonalds burgers taste better for some reason but the shopping malls are nowhere near as sophisticated as those in Bangkok.
Life can be somewhat humdrum however and certainly more predictable than Thailand.
Jesuuz but do you spout some bollocks. Only Malay women dress conservatively, and they are at best 1/3 of the population of women.
I also cannot see any Chinese Malaysian looking once at you let alone twice or a hookup.
But if Malaysia is so superior…why the fuck are you stuck in a concrete box in whoreville Pattaya???
Hah, you really are quite stupid, aren’t you. Dumb, lumpen and gormless, what a combination.
Malaysian demographics by ethnicity: Bumiputera 69.5% Chinky 22.5 % Indian 6 %
I’m not in the market for new wimmin, you dozy simian fuckwit, but a younger man scattering his seed on some grand venture may well wish to commingle and his best bet would be the Chink girls…..of course such an option would never have been possible in your case given you were born a warty, hunchbacked monster and probably only ever attractive to a fucking blind dayak with a bone through its nose.
I know you are dense, I know intelligence in your case is fleeting and intermittent, and I know you are probably clinically afflicted by some inadequacy limiting comprehension, but even the dimmest denizen of this board is aware I am settled in Thailand on retirement with my Thai wife with whom I live in our rather nice beachside condo in northern Pattaya and enjoy a social and family life derived from those antecedents. Retirement in Malaysia would not offer the same options, you dumb spasticated moron.
Fucko!
