I hit a 12 on the first. My first hit was a horrible duff and on so due blokes refused to allow me a mulligan, which is really not golf. Imagine they surprise when I parred the 2nd.
Today I rode my off-road motorbike up a mountain that overlooks the town of Luang Prabang (Laos) where I live. The reason for this journey was to try to find a location where I have line-of-sight to a geostationary ham radio satellite that is positioned over Africa. Due to the curvature of the Earth, the required antenna dish elevation angle is just 4 degrees, and at my home the nearby hills and mountains obscure my line of sight. So I checked Google Earth and identified this location as a possible spot to try to communicate via that satellite.
Next time, I need to bring my satellite dish, laptop and all the various radiocomms bits and bobs up the mountain on my motorbike :)
Note the crappy air quality, which is due to the stubble burning in the hills. I must have a word with these hilltribe folks...

Unfortunately I left my geological hammers in Korat so we had to wing it and just look for small fossil cephalopods that can be found amongst the pebbles on the beach. We were further frustrated by the vast amount of amateur grockles cluttering the beach, screaming kids and all, most of which wouldn't know an ammonite from an arsehole. They just wander about, smashing rocks on the ground and banging away with with cheap building hammers and are an embarrassment. I strongly believe that you shouldn't be allowed on this beach unless you hold a degree in Geology.

An experienced eye can spot fossilised ammonite death assemblages such as this.

These ammonites are from the Lower Lias, around 190 million years old. The fossil brachiopod I found last week at the top of Crook Peak in the Mendip Hills was contained in Carboniferous limestone, around 350 million years old, so approximately twice as old as these ammonites at Lyme Regis. In fact, that brachiopod fossil was already 160 million years old when these ammonites were swimming around.
It makes you think.

Here's the daughter walking along the base of the cliffs at West Bay, to the east of Lime Regis. The cliffs are mainly sandstone (Bridport Sand Formation) that is younger than the geology at Lyme Regis, and for various reasons contain few fossils. The more resistant calcareous layers represent changes in conditions of a cyclic nature, probably warmer, lower energy and deeper water... and these beds represent many million years of time.
It makes you realise how insignificant we are in the scheme of things in terms of time... human's time on earth would be a few millimeters in the geological record represented by this cliff. Yet we have had such an impact in those few 'millimetres' of time.

This professor was at Southampton Uni when I did my degree and is/was an expert on the geology at Lyme Regis. As with anything, you can go as detailed as you want. This could have been me in another life... I have some envy although I bet I have more enjoyable passport renewals.
