Question Poll How long are you in Thailand each year ?

No I am not selling rhyme share , skin darkening nor lightening products, just curious as I still like to read TD overseas but not so frequently

Considering even long term residents with homes and families like me need vacations I have divided into

    Plus 40 weeks a year

Plus 26 weeks which due to visa hassle may be all younger budget visitors can easily do

Less than 13 few normal holidays, sailing stopovers, business, winter breaks etc

Would like more but just short trips typical 2 week package holidays/ cruise

None at all but have interest connections or wish to retire/resettle

I shall make this anonymous so stoatally bona fido

Some years I do spend 3 months abroad on multi rips but over the last few years due to Covid and the hassles of long haul for pleasure somewhat less.

I would guess over the last 25 years I have spent about 75% here and as entropy grounds me further the joys of long haul wane, I still like to visit Alaska Mali Antarctica and Bolivia the few places I want to visit and have not, but will not lose sleep if I end my days here at the lazy acre.

    How about you?

I've been back in the UK for a total of 2 weeks in 13 years.

The occasional holiday outside but not much.

very early retirement enabled us to move to thailand full time for around 12 years until 2016 and then we moved back to the uk, still have a condo in hua hin and we spend around 4 months a year in thailand, dividing our time between hua hin, and bangkok .. on sukhumvit, where mrs.t has a house.

yorkshire is a fine place to live, bit chilly at times, even in the summer, but the countryside and coastline are both accessible and stunning. a front rank condo in hua hin, and a "pomme de terre" on central sukhumvit ensures time spent in thailand is both comfortable and very different from our time in the uk.

Things got bunged up this year so my plans haven’t worked out. I was hoping to spend each smoky season away. As it is now, the only 2 months I have been in Thailand this year has been smoky season.

I manage around 3 months / 13 weeks a year in Thailand. We had a 3 month spell at the start of covid and were then unable to go back for over a year. Now we are back to the normal rhythm. Three trips of 2 to 6 weeks each depending on work.
I should have retired but we like to travel around Europe as well.

Spent 2 summers travelling around Europe with me old man, one mountain biking as a 14 yr old, one rock climbing as a 16 yr old. 2 months for each trip, mainly France and Spain with a few jaunts into their neighbours.

As my older sister says, both of us still talk about it.

When Edweena is 15 + 16 I plan to take her for a summer tour of Europe and of Asia. Have already told her that when she completes uni, she's to spend at least 2 years working-travelling around the world before focusing on her businesses/career. Have a framed map of the world on the wall in the villa hallway to plant seeds.

I'm sure yer boys get a lot out of the travels.

Traditionally, for the past 16 odd years I've always spent around equal time in Thailand / out Thailand due to regular offshore work rotations. I like to do somewhere between 150 and 180 days work a year, with also some time spent visiting the UK and places. Sometimes I would have spent maybe 8-9 months a year away from home.

Covid seems to have changed that forever, and with different working practices and my desire to spend more time with the daughter during her time of 'change', I seem to be spending an awful lot of time in country. The awfality of Korat is moderated by the benefit I can see that my daughter is gaining from the stability and routine she now gets and I have no regrets at all about dwindling these endless months away in the God-awful heat and humidity of Isaan.

But anyway, I believe that spending more than 180 days a year in Thailand may have consequences to tax liability? Anyone know?

Guidance note for residence, domicile and the remittance basis: RDR1 - GOV.UK

i would have thought being domiciled in thailand would be beneficial to your tax status. i always thought that you offshore wallahs didn't pay tax anyway.

Been here nearly 8 months now and plan is to stay year around. Only visited Thailand once in the 12 year period after leaving in 2010 until returning last year.

Regarding the tax liability I thought any country that has a tax treaty with Thailand was exempt. That’s true for the US.

    !
And that is partly the point.
In my previous life I was going through a passport a year - no life.

I certainly don't miss it. I enjoy being around my family on a daily basis

If you earn less than 150000 baht, you shouldn't pay, Mendip.

    And yours?

Because I think even a TEFLr on 20k per month will earn more than that minimum and this be required to pay tax, eh? This tis not a very helpful minimum for anyone.
