And made a lot of Thais very, very rich. (if true)One man explains how he altered the fate of a remote Thai island, and (probably) inspired a hit Hollywood film
You gonna go there when you come here on holiday Haz?
'I found paradise, drew a map, and within 15 years it was ruined'
‘I found paradise, drew a map, and within 15 years it was ruined’
Very true.
Like many of us, I went to places like Samui and Koh P in 1996 or so - fantastic. Went back a few years later and many places (such as Chaweng beach) had dramatically changed for the worse. I always thought that the Full Moon parties were crap and full of irritating wankers. Bottle Beach was nice back then - could only get there by boat, a few huts and one restaurant; early closing, no electricity (one generator). I should imagine that it has changed dramatically.
(As per above, anything that wants me to start an account for a "free period" does not get read by me...) The gist, was hugely obvious from the pictures alone.
Cycling should be banned!!!
Christ these threads are such wank.
Look, just because you arrive first, take a shit under a fucking tree, blow some dope, swim in the surf and eat fish and rice every fucking meal doesn’t confer exclusive residence rights or make you a fucking pioneer. You’re no fucking different to anyone else who comes, the first tourist or the millionth, you’re no different, you squat to shit, probably talk bollox, and are looking for a good time and hope you cop a shag without fucking up and breaking your budget.
But, to be fair, the thread has gone up since your arrival, Mr Seekingasylum, Sir.
I can't say that I've ever copped a shag without fucking up; thought that was the point?
Oh, but the good old days of the little bridge across to the Reggae Bar; 3 large bottles of Chang for 100 baht (and the pound got 82 baht back then) - happy days.
That's my memory of the "fact" 82 baht to the pound, and I'm sticking to it no matter what other information/sources/details are brought to light...
Edit to add, I was wrong:
85 baht to the pound - and, it was elephant beer (the strong one), not Chang, so we're talking three large bottles of high % beer in (was it the Big Mango/Green Mango) then off to the Reggae Bar.
(I can't find pictures of the Chang version of Tennents Super that they used to sell in those days, but I'm sure some of you remember???)
Maybe it was 1997/8 when I was in Samui getting great exchange rates...

You muppet, that was the return on 1996 GBP
Indeed. It would be brilliant.
Take care, most of them are ex-SAS!
^ so I have heard. Fat dumpy couldn't run 50 yds before doubling over wheezing begging for a smoke.
^ maybe true, but the exchange rate was fantastic!
Anyways, wasn't T57 there in 76, did the place up the blurter and t'was all downhill since his time...
Must have been in 97.
USD to Thai Baht exchange rate - 1997 Asian financial crisis - Wikipedia
Couldn't find the Pound-Baht one
I cashed out my baht into £ travelers cheques, we got married and headed out on our honeymoon of ten weeks in '97.
BKK - London - Madrid, Train to Barcelona, Bus to Potes in Galicia, then Salamanca, Lisbon - London - BKK
I got the cash for my remaining traveller's cheques in Baht, and it was about 60,000
baht less than I'd had before I'd bought the plane tickets.
What a larf, eh?
