How many steps do you take in a day ?

I walk a fair bit when I'm on a trip or getaway. I wasn't sure how much it was so I flicked on the step counter on my phone. It's 4 pm, just back at the room. I've done 6883 steps today. And I will go out more later.

I probably don't put near enough miles on in a regular day. The average would be lower than this. Some fitness fiends say you gotta take 10,000 steps a day. But that seems like bullshit.

I average 19,107 steps a day around our place doing various upkeep, dog runs and walks down to the river and back. I use the same Samsung health App you do. My daughter and I share info for fun to keep us motivated.

You set your goal at 6,000 steps?

Nothing like setting a low bar so as you can feel good about yourself.

When I was working back in the US I commuted over an hour to work. I wore one of these Fitbit watches that was supposed to keep track of all of these things. One day I noticed that while sitting in my car doing the commute home I had registered a large number of steps while sitting in the car , so i looked into it, and it turns out that the watch had an accelerometer that detected the swing if your arms.
Not sure if they now use a different technology, or better algorithms.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

It is still exists as a potential problem. I forgot to stop a work out cycle walking and took a ride on my Wave to the market. Showed I was walking at 50km an hr. I use the Watch 4 now and that recognizes the difference. The phone itself doesn't.

No. That was the default setting. I just opened the app for the first time yesterday.

How far is the river ? That seems high. It's basically double what the average active person shoots for which is 10,000.

I wish I had this when I traveled in my 20's. Me and my friend would walk for hours before we paid a cab fare. We enjoyed it. 10+ kilometers at a time

Yeah sounds like a lot but how far do you actually walk? With your short legs I would only need about 5000 tp walk the same distance.
Do you count everything you do? Just in case Mendy is interested how many times a year do you clip your toe nails?

Don't do step number, but generally workout twice a day. Cycling, running or fight training in the morning for around 800 calories. Then a little light 4-6 set gym sesh in the afternoon for around 200 calories. Warm oil massage usually sandwiched in between.

Funny one ootai. However it considers avg stride calculation and uses GPS so you would still need to walk . The bigger tracking info is the Activity time and the steps. I also track swimming and bike riding which does not show in the step total but does in daily activity.

Here are a few screen shots from my app which is tracked by my Watch and synch'd to the app.

Cardio from 6 am to about 6pm on March 15th

Had a big yard clean up day and a long run/jog to the river with our puppy a few days ago. First time I ever exceeded 30K steps

My current weekly daily avg, calories burned and activity level. I get a weekly summary. This week I have been less active as I have been on more business calls and and numerous trips to vet with my puppy.

I have an ankle/calf injury that keeps me from my preferred hill trail running and hiking at present, limited to walking on the flat in the meantime, aim for a 10-15km every second day alternating with 5km; 67km in past seven days.
Not too obsessed with steps, distances or times just aiming to maintain a level of fitness as getting back into the hills is another step (step!!) up from what I'm doing now.
Don't like gyms/running machines, have a selection of routes to choose from.
    Just add water.

I don't think the technology has changed much unless you set the activity on your watch, which makes tracking more accurate, depending on watch. I noticed that mine says I've been cycling when I do the ironing or mow the lawn. Setting the activity also gets my watch to use the mobile GPS facility rather than using up my data tracking me via the mobile network.

I work in an office and do use the step count to ensure I get up and walk, try to do at least a 30 minute walk at lunchtimes and another longer walk in the evening. I like to get at least 5000 steps in a single walk each day as long as the weather permits. Last week I managed just over 90,000 steps but I am happy if I get to 70,000 in the colder months.

Fu*k me talk about OCD you are off the charts!
30,289 steps for only 20210 metres you do have short legs don't you! That equates to only 0.67m/step.

I actually only worry about taking one step every day and that's the one I take getting out of bed as it means I'm still alive.

Had a full one hour jog very early today, plus have done a good amount of steps both stairs and flat at work. Should get another 5,000 steps before calling it a day. Normally 17-18,000 a day on work days, a little less on weekends.

Actually Ootai, I monitor this for a few reasons, the primary one being to stay active and healthy and moreover med free. I know some day it all catches us but staying active, eating right, live a low stress life will hopefully prolong slipping into a med regiment every morning or night. Of course the other bonus is I can drink 3 or 4 beers a day while working and gain no weight, in fact conversely I have lost about 3kgs in last 3 weeks

Also on steps keep in mind. The sensor tracks GPS location and even if I have my watch set to monitor walking it only shows when a moving at rate of speed. When it doesn't, it auto pauses. Example is. If I am vacuuming the pool one typically takes little side steps and while it shows as a step, the distance doesn't correlate leading to a steps/distance being small. Has nothing to do with me being a midget or you a Gargantuan..

I just stopped for lunch, already at 10, 697 steps and 177 minutes active time. I have a few more things I want to do after lunch. Will probably finish with about 15 to 16k steps or so plus a few laps in the pool.

If I was retired , I'd settle into a nice workout routine like that too.

I sometimes find venturing beyond the property on foot a step too far in the heat so cycle or do indoor exercise in the hot months, when in Europe I am happy to walk for miles here not so much. What is the recommend app please to measure on my phone?
