    Cool Memories

Bit of reminiscing looking through some photos with the girls.

This i took on Leeds Castle on our way to South Georgia from the Falklands Is, this was past the Antarctic Convergence Zone. Later that night the stabiliser took a shit and i was woken up getting thrown out of my bunk. The trip was the ships last down south and after she made her way back to the UK via some South America stops before being decommissioned.

Whilst we were down South Georgia way we stopped at the abandoned Whaling station at Gytviken. There is a small church that was used by the Whalers and it was there the Islands only two (at the time) permanent residents lived, they were a brit couple who sailed there on their Yacht and stayed setting up a souvenir and tea shop catering for visiting Cruise ships. Its also where Ernest Shackleton the explorer is buried.

Its was weird how calm it was given how stormy our trip down from the Falkland Is was.

The photo is a wide angle shot as we entered the bay and you can see the station, a rusted group of buildings. We did a recce up and over the mountains.

South Georgia is home to one if not the largest King Penguin colonies. We had to don survival suits for Rib run to the beach and at the time most of the adult Kings were off fishing for the nongs so the the colony you see below is mainly the babies

the place stinks as they eat a diet of krill so the air was alive with the smell of rotting fishy shit

This guy is a full grown Elephant seal, they are enormous. There was only three on the beach in Grytviken as it was early in the mating season and so there bulls were the earliest and got the best spots. In high mating season you couldn't get this close about 3 meters. When the ladies turn up its all fights. He was over 4 meters long.

There were three of us walking along the beach and we were a little worse for wear as we'd hosted the British Antarctic Survey staff onboard the night before and we were just yakking away, my mate grabbed me as i was just about to walk straight into this monster, he didn't bat an eyelid.

every night we got back showered, hit a few bars but always ended up at this place and ate. The staff after night 2 told us to get there at 12 and we ate with them free just contributed to the wine - some of the best BBQ food i've ever eaten

fond memories but slow starts in the morning after crawling home at 3-4 am with 09.30 starts

    ^^

Spent a couple of weeks not far away, in Punta Arenas. A bar I used every night had a refrigerated display unit with fresh meat as part of the bar, and made memorable steak sandwiches. Also spent some time in Comodoro Rivadavia, where the natives were also friendly. Great number of people with Welsh surnames in that part of the world, and even Welsh speakers I believe.

Interesting story about Welsh Miners emigrating to Patagonia over 200 years ago

They must have felt at home there, almost similar to Snowdonia.
