What potentially interesting job did you turn down?

Many years ago I was offered a job by Durex to 'head' up their Thai condom-making factory located (I recall) near to Surat Thani....

I declined since I felt that I didn't have enough 'experience' in this sector of the market!

Have you ever been offered out-of-the-ordinary employment?

Geological research on Antarctica over summer (unpaid internship). But I needed to actually work and make money.

Walking advertisement for a backpacker's, wearing a sandwich board . . . but I did accept a job as a hand-model in Sri Lanka during the same trip as a teenager. Basically for watches and rings in local papers and mags - never saw the results as I had moved on.

Wasn't interesting but I was offered a job as a systems engineer in a converted septic tank on the Highlander rig.

My reply contained the words "off" and "fuck", but not in that order.

Turned down an offer to manage a western bar in Phnom Penn. Turned out they only wanted someone to stop Cambodian staff from playing Cambodian music in a Cambodian bar.

    Insufficient challenge. Insufficient $.

An instructor at the Defense Language Institute was providing me with some of their Japanese language materials to help me out learning Japanese. Then he asked me to start a course in Arabic so I could go to work in the Middle East. He didn’t say what work. Scared shit out of me, though.

Whilst at university i helped out in the ents office, this was run by students and their job was to book bands and organise the regular saturday night concerts held in the student union hall.

Bands that played the uni circuit at that time were the who, led zep, the stones, jethro tull, moody blues, free, elp, black sabbath etc.

The head of the ents office graduated and left and i was asked if i wanted to take over, i declined thanks to the demands of my course, 2 full days in the ents office were required, and my course could not accommodate that.

The guy who did take over as head of ents was headhunted after a year, left uni and went on to become one of the countries biggest concert promoters, partly thanks to the many contacts in the music business he made whilst at uni.

    regrets? I've had a few
but then again, too few to mention
i did what i had to do
i saw it through, without exemption.

I'm thinking back to other job offers that I have had.

I was offered a job as a design engineer for depth-charge mines, the sort that ships drop into the sea to explode near enemy submarines. I declined the job.

I was offered a job as the transmitter engineer on a small offshore radio station in the 1970's (Radio Delmare). I accepted the job but was arrested by the Dutch police when I returned to shore after 3 months.

Despite having signed the UK Official Secrets Act yonks ago and worked on various rather secret radio/sat comms projects, I was never approached by a 'man in the pub' and asked to get involved in espionage

I visited Kuwait just prior to the Iraqi invasion. I was invited over by 2 business sisters who had expressed an interest to buy my SMS/AI company (well, 'company' meant just me...!). They offered 200,000 pounds which was way too low (I eventually sold myself for $2.2 USD, god knows where all the money went!).

I'm not a great drinker of alcohol, but there is nothing more frustrating when you know that you cannot get a beer, even if you don't really want a beer. I ended up buying a bottle of some malt shite! It was the most disgusting drink that I have ever tasted.

Turned down the chance to be a military fighter pilot. I don't think I have the temperament for such a job.

Turned down several sim contracts in ME including a lucrative RSA one for their 777 training centre. I refuse to work anywhere in ME due to their barbaric laws.

Actually I do know! $1.1M of shares were worthless after the company that acquired me went bust. $1M went on building a beautiful house in 5 acres that I gave to my ex-wife #1. The rest was wasted on hookers and alcohol. Actually, not wasted - it was very enjoyable at the time...
