My SIL bought one and says it doesn't work very good and it was a bit pricey. Of course Dyson product are available here.

Funny it took me about a year to convince my wife that those damn hand made rice stalk brooms leave behind more dirt and crap then they clean. I had to physically show her. I finally tossed them all out and said No More.

    Old habits die hard.
I brought a rechargeable one with me from the US, I think it; a Eureka. Have it for over five years now and still works fine, Not the most powerful one, but does the job.
I love these Thai , whatever they are made from. brooms. the trick with them is to hung then up when not in use. Either from a hole in the handle or with a two prong holder so it can be hung upside down. If allowed to to rest on the floor up side up. the bristles part like a handlebar mustache ,and you are right, they miss more than they pick up.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

I was told they are made from Rice blades or whatever. I hate them. Sure they work great in my shop area where I don't really care, but house use, Forget it. I showed my wife one day after she swept with one and I came back with a synthetic broom and I swept up a pile of that crap. I laugh when they have this rule about shoes in the house nonsense and yet use a broom that leaves more crap then it cleans.

Coming from the west we never took our shoes off when going in and out of the house. I don't do it here either unless my day is done.

In our family we always have, leave them in the porch which is enclosed and not exposed to the outside elements. Walk around in slippers, stocking feet or go naked.

Growing up on a farm, we wore shoes in the down stairs area but never upstairs. But we really only went upstairs when you are calling it a night.

Now I got cracked alot coming in from duck hunting or fishing with boots on. Mom would toss her kitchen boomerang and clip my head and I headed back out. She didn't mind I cleaned the fish in the kitchen sink but the ducks and geese had to be done out in the garage and no feathers allowed.

    Ahh the good ol days.

Though I find a thought of you naked highly disturbing, I agree with you about the shoes never entering the house.

Them be fighting words. And I find myself compelled to challenge you to an old fashion sweep-off.(Canterbury rules)

Come over my house and bring your synthetic (augh) broom and sweep the upstairs with it, then I will give you my Thai broom and let you sweep my downstairs, and let you be decide .
If you are not entirely convinced, in all fairness, I would let you come back and do it again a week later.
    PM me for details.

The first time that I saw a cordless, handheld vacuum cleaner was in 2014, when I visited the USA. I stayed with an old schoolmate for a few days and she had a toddler. The baby scattered some cookie crumbs & my friend cleaned the crumbs from their sofa - when she used it, I was amazed! Nowadays, I see them being advertised in malls.

I know about the Roomba or those robot floor cleaners but I don't know of anyone in my circle who uses one. Me - I use a broom and a mop.

Re: Dyson - not a vacuum cleaner, but I once saw a Dyson hair dryer at a mall in Manila & the price was P35,000 (~700 usd). I thought - who the heck in PH would buy a hair dryer at that price! My hair dryer cost me ~30 usd some years ago & it's still working.

Btw, I'm luvin' this mumsnet conversation!

It's amazing how isolated and secluded some of you guys live. Work smarter, not harder as my Dad always taught me. It's paid dividends.

Having a cordless leaf blower is a life saver here. I can clean up an area in 5 minutes that would take hours. Let's be positive here, it's not a gas powered leaf blower so I am doing my green part.

I fully support fossil fuels over lithium mining wherever possible, but a hoover is not one of them.

After extensive research... I have settled with the Electrolux Well 6 Self-standing Handstick Vacuum Cleaner.

Electrolux makes good stuff DD. We have a big clothes dryer and their washer for almost 6 years now. No issues.

Depends on the quality of the economy mode.

To be fair tho, having a cordless Hoover on hand at all times will be used quite often over the broom and pan. Mostly for crumbs and shit like that.

    Kids.

If you mean encouraging them to clean up their own mess, then yes.

However, have an amazing ability to break everything they touch.

My youngest breaks things so he can try to fix them. And fail. He gets that from me.
