You'd probably remember Pat's pies on 3rd Road from back then too but yeah, they used the same pastry that was of the pale, dense, and non flaky type. Best we could get back then though until Lady Pie opened in Phuket about 2006 I guess and started shipping pies with the darker and flaky pastry that good meat pies have to supermarkets around Thailand.

I have never tried Pat's pies.

The only time I have tried a Lady Pie was at Drifters Bar.

I was asked by the owner to bring a mince beef and onion pie to his bar so we could have a Taste- Off comparison with a Lady Pie.

His wife heated the pies and the taste test began and even he admitted my wife's pie was the best re: pastry and taste.

Sadly we couldn't agree on a price so he is still using Lady Pies.

^ We have a few English and Aussie guys that visit us regularly to buy pies and all claim my wife's pies are the best.

In fact only yesterday 1 guy told me my wife's pies are as good as Tinnies and at less then half the price they are terrific value.

More efficient kitchens? Higher turnover? Smaller profit margin? Lower ingredient costs due to bulk purchasing?

If you've tried a Yorkies pie you've also tried one of Pat's pies, they were pretty much identical in every way.

Fuck I haven't been down there for years! Lady pies are quite good and when she first opened they were the best I knew of in Thailand. But like all pies, they were way better fresh out of the oven in her shop/factory in Phuket rather than reheated from frozen. Still though, I'd bring a small cooler bag with a dozen of them frozen on the plane back to Pattaya when visiting Phuket, before supermarkets here started to stock them.

    'Economies of scale'.

Yes, microeconomics obviously wasn't part of Mike's factory floor sweeping apprenticeship 90 odd years ago.

^ I scored a great deal in Saraburi once.

1 curry puff was 5 baht each, but I saw a sign in the corner of her stall where they had a deal informing me I could get 20 for 100 baht.

Yup. Noticed that as the kid loves me 'shrimp Pop' in breadcrumbs, and only those packs will suffice. Not usually one to take note of prices but do recall they're up to 129thb each now.
