    Yorkies is no more!

For the past week I have tried to source my usual supply of back bacon produced by our well established Pattaya based firm of butchers, Yorkies, that arrived in the 1990s when Norman and Eileen Denning set up the business.

From The Best to Big C Extra, Villa, to Makro but no luck, literally not a sausage. Eventually went in to Central Festival’s Tops which was probably the most reliable of stockists only to find their counter to be bereft of any Yorkies bacon save for a lonely clump of three packs of streaky, their last apparently.

It seems they have ceased trading and the business is up for sale for 10 million baht.

Norman Denning suffered a fatal heart attack in 2011 but his wife soldiered on until she returned to Blighty a couple of years ago. Seems the decreasing Brit population has eroded demand and competition has whittled away profits.

It’s a disaster. Yorkies back bacon was that rare thing here in Thailand, reliably and professionally produced quality back bacon with a hint of fat sold fresh in a sensibly expiry dated sealed pack from a variety of local stores.

The other Brit bacon suppliers tend to be mostly wholesalers selling in commercial sized frozen packs. I tried one and it was pumped up with so much water it was rubbish.

    RIP Yorkies.

    I am desolated.

    Thai bacon is a travesty.

Norman and Eileen visited us regularly and at the end of the day Norman's products probably hastened his demise.

He was a fat grunt but lovable and it was only a matter of time before Eileen was left a widow.

Great memories from the shop on Jomtien Beach.

Tried Sloanes but it was so fatty and thin, and overpriced too.

Yorkies back bacon was superb for sandwiches and salads. There is no replacement to be found.

Dear snagless in Siam you are in our thoughts and prayers.

I'm sure he won't mind me sharing but Lulu has a number where you can rent a sausage by the hour in Chiang Mai if you are really gagging for it . Get into uch and ask for Saveloytoyboy

Try the security staff at gullivers, they always have a ready supply of processed meats confiscated from feckless travelers.

    Tried these SA?

Prime Food Service- Producers & Suppliers of Fine Foods

It's owned by Vic & Jane, who also own the Queen Vic in Soi 6.

Never tried these, and they are in Jomtien, but-

    Meatstuff Swiss-Canadian

p.s- I thought Yorkies sausages were pretty bloody average.

Well, I'm quite shocked to hear that SA eats bacon at all! Worse, he admits to eating a bacon sarnie, true blue collar food.

Surely it should be a bowl of muesli or boiled egg with soldiers during the week and devilled kidneys at the week-end.

If you need some extra flavour for cooking the pancetta must be your choice over bacon.

You are letting the cs down SA, retired or otherwise.

If its any consolation SA, I've just had a damn reasonable bacon sandwich with 3 rashers of thick cut smoked back bacon.

    Very nice it was

Fails to enter the sausage or bring home the bacon, a rasher man than me would seek to be cured.

^ I never tried their pork pies but I didn't like their standard pies due to the pastry.

This fact was the reason my wife started making her own pies using puff pastry.

……. balanced by using healthy brown, wholemeal bread. That’s how I justify it to myself anyway.

I prefer my bacon butties to be garnished by HP sauce between two slices of good white farmhouse loaf fresh that day.

When I don the healthy hat I butter two slices of granary bread and adorn one with a good layering of coleslaw onto which I lay a few slices of firm avocado and then add rashers of thick smoked dry cured back bacon and then slop a nice dollop of mayonnaise, Hellmans, and a drop or two of HP sauce for piquancy.

    Heaven.

Try it but make sure you add HP sauce. Ketchup would be a terrible, terrible mistake.

My curiosity is piqued and I shall endeavour to do it when I have good bacon again in a couple of months.

In the meantime, I reckon Chitty could come up with all sorts of creations based on your inspiration.

Just as likely to end up with the air fryer in the coleslaw after a bottle or two of rotgut.
