I used a Starbucks in Penang for the "free" wifi and comfy chair the coffee was so so and overpriced about 5 x the excellent coffee sold in trad Hokkien cafes
Interestingly a staff training for about 15 started while I was in their Prangin Mall branch, no discussion at all of the beans , which of course the staff have zero control over they are merely machine monkeys for a franchise system. The mark up on the sugary drinks for those who don't really like real coffee but have been marketed "Coffee culture"
Today in N Thailand there are real coffee machines almost everywhere on the highways now, unlike 20 years ago when 3 in One was all, some better than others charging 35-55 for my expresso. The price seldom reflects the brew quality.
Of course to the young who live in shared flats or with mum a comfortable space to hang out, less aggressive than many pubs and dreams of living the Seattle dream in a TESLA Snubmarine.
At home I grind a week of beans for my daily fix.
