The Greatest Films of All Time

In 1952, the Sight and Sound team had the novel idea of asking critics to name the greatest films of all time. The tradition became decennial, increasing in size and prestige as the decades passed.

The Sight and Sound poll is now a major bellwether of critical opinion on cinema and this year’s edition (its eighth) is the largest ever, with 1,639 participating critics, programmers, curators, archivists and academics each submitting their top ten ballot.

What has risen up the ranks? What has fallen? Has 2012’s winner Vertigo held on to its title? Find out below.

As the saying goes, "it's not the critic who counts", etc.

Most of them are pretentious knobheads.

I don't see Monty Python's Search for the Holly Grail mentioned.
HAL failed the Turing test when he mentioned 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Well that and his thinly disguised user ID

One of my mom's friends was an extra in Vertigo. She was one of the three Nuns that walk by in a Mission scene.

I've always have been an Alfred Hitchcock fan since the old series "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour". When I heard Alfred Hitchcock was filming a movie called "Topaz" on a family friend's ranch. I just had to go out to watch the filming and perhaps see Alfred Hitchcock. The filming was near and on Old Stage Road in the shadow of Fremont Peak, the ending point of John Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley".

They had fake Palm trees all over the place. Alfred Hitchcock was ever present and looked just like he did on TV. I watched the filming of the hiding of the microfilm in the country bridge rail scenes. A lot of hurry up and wait and long discussions.

    Great story
    Watched most Hitchcocks
Was it a real bell Tower or a mock up?

    That area is wonderful too.
All of vertigo has a spooky dreamy atmosphere am I right the SF scenes were by the the Freemont Hotel or Faremount? at the top of a big Hill above the streetcar Museum and China town?

Despite the dated sets those film noir are amongst those worth watching again.
Rear Window with a tiny set full of menace and suspense is probably his finest color work, tho the original 39 steps is still evergreen.after almost a century.

As he was on a movie I was involved in. I worked for a small construction company who did some set building for a movie he did a few miles from my home. Maybe you guys are familiar with the movie.

The Bell Tower scene was filmed at the Misson San Juan Baustista (built 1797) which sits literally on the edge of the San Andreas fault. That mission does not have a bell tower in the traditional sense or portrayed in Vertigo. Instead, next to the Chapel on the fualt side is an arched wall with several cut outs for bells. On the back side of the bell wall is the mission cemetery. No stairs all old sixties bad animation for the bell tower scenes. By the way the Old Stage Road mentioned in the Topaz filming goes to San Juan Baustista.

I once was a member at a small cinema where I went to watch master tapes of non-descript movies movies that never made it big time but were definitely enjoyable.

I loved the classics from the 40's and 50's and particularly the Marx Brothers with their dry humour and Groucho was a classic.

Not a swear word but he was without pier with his delivery.

I remember that the movie was filmed north of SF. I was thinking that it was Sevastopol or Santa Rosa, but Wikipedia says Bodega Bay.
