I live from one month to the next, based on my wits and my service pension. Both are inadequate.

Ask Cyrille. He's never met me but he knows everything ....... apparently.

I buy luxuries like bread and shoes only to make my lifestyle appear normal.

I drop a kilo or so of bacon and black pudding off at my local food bank most weeks. The place is run by Trotsky types who would have the UK feed cattle food and something called "quinoa" to its kids.

Even the volunteers admit that most of their "clients" are not really poor in the Orwellian Road to Wigan Pier sense. They are just uneducated, lazy and incapable of managing a household budget.

except for climate, and to some degree even that, all of the above are not leading issues but rather symptoms .
Once again we are at a transitional period.
If you look at a picture of a major city before the 1900s you would see them full of horses , transporting people and goods. Ten years later , same picture, maybe one or two horses .
There was a very large infustracture to support the horse industry, Stables, food, vicenarians etc. Horses were used for thousands of years. no one imagined they will go away in 10 years. Same with many industries that were eliminated by the industrial revolution.
We are now at another historica inflection point as we enter the information age and particular AI. Many talk about the different dangers on AI but miss the most immediately dangerous to human society, which has already started happening,
Economic dislocation from loss of job and the ensuing competition for the remaining jobs .
Just like horses , humans have been involved in all means of production. who can imagine that in the next few decades, they will be removed from the biggest part of the equation.
It is already happening!! Distribution warehouses with hardly a human in them, self driving trucks , car manufacturing mostly done by robots.
What we are witnessing now are the symptoms of the first stages of the disease, and it will get worse before it gets better.
Unfortunately there does not exist the political will to not only address the problem, but to even acknowledge it.
Before one can start with a solution one has to first admit that he has a problem and unfortunately most of us are not even aware of the coming tsunami.
Wow !! what a bummer !! Way to ruin the party BB.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

Good points BB, the implications of tech will be huge and loss of secure local jobs difficult for all.

In contrast some French places are using horse power again !!

Oddly only highlighted yesterday about Inzinzac where Bentley buried

^^ The capitalist system has played out. A very few countries have a positive balance of payments with 98% of the world existing on debt, increasing every year. The UK has just had to put in place measures that will see austerity for up to a decade and the only reason the US can get away with its annual voting through the increase to the debt ceiling is its reserve currency status.

Something has to change, but the billionaires and politicians sucking at their teats will want to keep the gravy train rolling as long as they can, all the while the poor die as a result and he middle classes convince themselves its OK as long as they make their charity contributions.

China has millions a year leaving education and IT will recede menial tasks

Competition for resources, space, wives even has often led to conflict

Having tested tv soaps on the oldies the 'planners' realize kids need more action

Luckily the aspirations of the average Thai villageer here have not exceeded this analyis

Sir Anthony Rumbold, British ambassador to Thailand from 1965 and 1967, said of Thai society: "They have no literature, no painting and only a very odd kind of music; their sculpture, ceramics and dancing are borrowed from others, and their architecture is monotonous and interior decoration hideous.
"Nobody can deny that gambling and golf are the chief pleasures of the rich, and that licentiousness is the main pleasure of them all,"
