I read somewhere that 80% of doctors get that one wrong so if your doctor tells you you are positive then you still only have 2.5% chance of being positive
Would the probability increase (or decrease) by much if 1% more doctors read the Teak Door Brain Teaser thread?

^^ I think it depends on how many currants are in the garibaldi biscuit and whether you put milk in the cup before or after the tea.

The quizmaster shows the contestant 3 doors, behind 1 of these doors there is a brand new car behind the other 2 doors there is nothing.

Only the quizmaster knows which door opens to the car.
The contestant is asked to pick a door.

After choosing and without revealing if the contestant is right or wrong the quizmaster then opens one of the remaining 2 doors revealing nothing behind it.
He then invites the contestant to switch his choice if he so desires or remain with his original choice.

You are the contestant what would you do? And why?

(note to David44, ootai and Troy, the colour of the contestant's shoes is irrelevant )

Reverse psychology, the quizmaster obviously knows the contestant has chosen the correct door.
So sows the seed of doubt in an affable manner in order to change the mind.
Crafty cooker wants the car for himself.
    Love a bit of bully

Yes, Joe, whilst it's lovely to hear your intellectual thought process at this ungodly hour, I have to report that the answer you have supplied is surprisingly wrong.

    I beg to differ

I have brief moments of clarity and believe I am correct.

However, we shall see what other members thoughts are.
I particularly like to hear Lulu the fountain of all knowledge answer to the question.

How do you know the colour of his shoes aren't important, and don't forget to say if he has each of them on the correct foot!
as for the question I would tell me to fuk off I already have a car.

Plus thank you for the entertainment yesterday. I will admit that I am not the greatest fan of statistics but I believe I have come to a satisfactory point where I have explained the problem and answer in a way that I am happy with so just in case you are wondering I will restate the problem and the answer. Please don't throw your dummy out of the cot again.

    Problem: Iceman is a prick
Solution: Annoy him until he fuks off.

Well done ootai - if you don’t know the answer just change the subject.

BTW - were you feeling shit when you were caught cheating countless times on the Wordless thread?

The main problem here is that diagnostic tests do not have a single value of "accuracy". They are defined by two terms, namely specificity and sensitivity.

Sensitivity is the "true positive rate" which is the probability of a test returning positive, if the person is indeed positive.

Specificity is the "true negative rate" which is the probability of a test returning negative, if the person is indeed negative.

So, in this example the specificity might be 95%, but the sensitivity cannot be 95% - because the rate at which it correctly identifies a "true positive" is 1/50 or 2%.

So the test is 95% specific and 2% sensitive. Which would have it in a bin.

While the problem may have some fun aspects, it is not based in an understanding of diagnostic tests.
