With the medical test with 95% accuracy (or 5% false positive), if 1000 people are tested then 50 will test positive but only 1 will actually have the disease so the probability that you have the disease if you test positive is 1/50 or 2%

I read somewhere that 80% of doctors get that one wrong so if your doctor tells you you are positive then you still only have 2.5% chance of being positive

Would the probability increase (or decrease) by much if 1% more doctors read the Teak Door Brain Teaser thread?

The main problem here is that diagnostic tests do not have a single value of "accuracy". They are defined by two terms, namely specificity and sensitivity.

Sensitivity is the "true positive rate" which is the probability of a test returning positive, if the person is indeed positive.

Specificity is the "true negative rate" which is the probability of a test returning negative, if the person is indeed negative.

So, in this example the specificity might be 95%, but the sensitivity cannot be 95% - because the rate at which it correctly identifies a "true positive" is 1/50 or 2%.

So the test is 95% specific and 2% sensitive. Which would have it in a bin.

While the problem may have some fun aspects, it is not based in an understanding of diagnostic tests.
